Brooklyn Opens Up With 71-33 Rout Of New Rochelle

 Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Basketball Team (1-2) opened up their 2007-2008 home season by honoring senior co-captain Jaclyn Cavalcante (James Madsion / Brooklyn, NY) for scoring her 1,000th career point last February, then proceeded to defeat New Rochelle 71-33.

The Bridges opened the game on a 12-0 run, and led by 23 points at the break.  The team came out on fire in the second half, converting on eight of its first 10 shots.  Brooklyn led by as many as 42 points in the second stanza, shooting better than 51 percent for the period.

The win was a total team effort, with Christina McDonnell (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) leading the way for BC, scoring 23 points.  Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY) recorded the first double-double of the season for the Bridges, netting 13 points to compliment her 13 boards. Freshman Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) made the most of her home debut, scoring 14 points in only 10 minutes of action.

Freshman Ashley Allen (William C.  Bryant / Sunnyside, NY) dished out a career-high five assists and Joelle Laurenceau (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) notched four points, four steals and five rebounds. Cavalcante produced a game-high six assists and scored nine points.

Ruchelle Austin (Sheepshead Bay / Brooklyn, NY), a senior center, paced New Rochelle with 21 points and 11 rebounds.

Brooklyn will host Brooklyn rival Polytechnic University next Tuesday, November 27th at 5 pm as the first part of a doubleheader.  The men's game will start at 7:30 pm.
