Women's Basketball Can't Hold On To Halftime Lead At Tech

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY-- The Brooklyn College Women (5-12, 1-7 CUNY) hung tough but  were defeated by City Tech Yellow Jackets (5-12, 3-5 CUNY) 47-42 in conference play.

City Tech opened the game on a 6-0 run, as Tempestt Casey scored four points.  Christina McDonnell (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) then answered with back-to-back three pointers in less than 40 seconds to put the Bridges on top 10-8.  Three different Yellow Jackets scored during another 6-0 rally, capped off by a Wendy Flores jumper.  BC responded by closing out the period on an 11-5 run, including six points from the charity stripe.

A Casey lay-up to open the second stanza tied the contest for a fourth time and ignited a frenetic, back and forth battle between the two teams.  BC scored five straight points, as freshman guards Amber Gordon (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) and Ashley Allen (William C. Bryant / Sunnyside, NY) each contributed.  Tech answered with five straight points of their own to again knot the score, this time at 26-26.  The Yellow Jackets took the lead on a three-pointer by Flores and then stretched the advantage to 36-31.  The Bridges fought back, as Joelle Laurenceau (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) went on a personal 6-0 run to put BC back on top 37-36 with less than five minutes to play.

A free throw from Amalea Sideris (St. Demetrios / Astoria, NY) increased the margin to two points, 38-36.  Casey went to the line for the Yellow Jackets moments later, sinking two foul shots to even the score for a seventh time.  The third trifecta of the game for Flores put the homestanding Yellow Jackets up 41-38 with 2:47 left to play.  Over the next two minutes, the teams combined to misfire on seven straight field goal attempts.  Following a time-out, Gordon hit a jump-shot that pulled the Bridges back to within 41-40.  As the clock ticked down BC was forced to foul, sending Mareena Creary to the line, where she was two-for-two.  Amanda Zimenski and Casey would also hit free throws for the Yellow Jackets in the closing seconds, providing the final margin for the 47-42 decision.

City Tech was paced by Casey, who recorded her CUNYAC-best 13th double-double with 14 points and 16  rebounds.  Flores added 11 points in the victory.

The Bridges were led Gordon as she scored a team high 13 points. The duo of McDonnell and Sideris led the team with eight boards each.

The team continues on the road as they face conference and borough rival Medgar Evers College for a 5:30 pm Wenesday conference matchup.
