Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Softball Team(1-1) picked up their first victory of the 2009 season as they came back in the bottom of the 6th inning to win a 6-5 decision in the second of two games versus St. Elizabeth (7-1) at Floyd Bennet Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bridges were tied 2-2 going into the fifth inning of the day's first game, but a pair of errors led to five runs - four unearned - being scored by St. Elizabeth. A two-run homer by senior center fielder
Nataly Yehezkel (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) brought BC back to with three runs, 7-4 in the bottom of the frame. The Eagles scored another three unearned runs in the final two innings off Brooklyn starter
Nicole Bianco (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brookyln, NY), who was the hard-luck loser. CSE's Isabel Machuca notched eight strikeouts in the win.
Sophomore
Stephanie Garafola (Edward R. Murrow / Brooklyn, NY) started the second game and gave the Bridges four shutout innings in the pitcher's circle. Third baseman
Danielle Maresca (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) drove in a pair of runs with her thrid-inning single as Brooklyn took a 3-0 lead into the top of the sixth. With Bianco on in relief, the Eagles knocked home five runs. The big blow of the inning was a two-run single by Jenna Stumpf.
Down three going into the bottom of the last inning, the Bridges mounted a rally. With freshman catcher
Annie Brown (Bishop Kearney / Brooklyn, NY) on first with two outs, Yehezkel drew a walk. A passed ball advanced the runners to second and third. Ball four to
Christina Belfiore (Staten Island Tech / Staten Island, NY) was wild, allowing Brown to scamper home with the team's fourth run. Maresca hit a hard ground ball to first and the game appeared to be over, but Maresca deftly avoided the tag at first, making it safely as Yehezkel scored the tying run. Belfiore advanced to third on the play, and scored the winning tally moments later on another wild pitch.
The Bridges next play at New Jersey City University on Friday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
