Staten Island, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Softball Team (1-5, 0-2 CUNYAC) opened their 2009 conference slate by dropping a double header to Baruch College (5-5, 2-0 CUNYAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Bridges fell to the Bearcats by scores of 3-1 and 8-0.
In the first game, Brooklyn's Nicole Bianco (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Brooklyn, NY) surrendered three runs in the bottom of the second inning but was otherwise flawless. She finished the day giving up only four hits and two walks. Those three runs were able to stand up, as Baruch's ace Andrea Tepfer (Susan Wagner / Staten Island, NY) scattered three hits and fanned 13.
Christina Belfiore (Staten Island Tech / Staten Isalnd, NY) drove a base hit up the middle with two out in the fifth inning to plate Samantha Lombardi (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) with BC's lone run. The Bridges had a chance in their final at-bat as Nataly Yehezkel (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) and Belfiore each reached base with two down. That brought Danielle Maresca (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) to the plate, representing the go-ahead run but a hard groundball to second base ended the rally and the game.
In the second game, Bianco was done in by a pair of errors and let up three unearned runs inn the first two innings. The Bearcats cruised behind the solid effort of pitcher Lynn Schiano (St. Francis Prep / Middle Village, NY), who gave up only four hits while striking out 10. Bianco recorded two of the four hits for BC in the game, and finished the twin bill three for five.
The Bridges return to the field on Wednesday afternoon, hosting SUNY Old Westbury in a non-conference doubleheader. The games will be played at Floyd Bennett Field. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
