Cougars Claw Their Way to Victory Against Women's Volleyball

Box Score

Brooklyn College (1-5, 1-3 CUNYAC) dropped a hard-fought, three set match at home to the Medgar Evers Cougars (2-5, 1-3 CUNYAC ) 25-19, 25-21 and 25-20.  Despite the team's fourth straight loss, Head Coach Joanne Riggs remains optimistic about the Bridges' future.

"This a young team that is still working on their confidence and consistency during matches," said Riggs.  "Once they start believing in themselves, they will accomplish great things on the volleyball court."

Daphne Brunet
(Willi-Graf / Brooklyn, NY) led the attack for the Bridges, recording seven kills and four aces.

BC led early in the first set, up 7-2, but a strong service run by Fransheila Ortega (Bishop Loughlin / Brooklyn, NY) put the Bridges in a hole which they could not dig themselves out of. The Cougars went on to win the set 25-19.

Set number two was a bitter struggle the entire way, with the teams tied 20-20 late in the set.  However, the Cougars, led by Chartia Henry (British Virgin Island High School / Brooklyn, NY), powered their way to victory, taking the set 25-21. Henry would tally fourteen kills with just two hitting errors in the match.  The Bridges would regroup to take an early lead in the third set, but Medgar Evers managed to fight off the deficit once again, winning 25-20.

Brooklyn College will try to get back in the win column this Saturday, September 26, as they travel to take on Sarah Lawrence.  The Bridges' final home match, Senior Night, will take place on Tuesday October 6 against Purchase College.
