Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team (10-6, 5-2 CUNYAC) swept its CUNY Athletic Conference Multi-Match today, defeating the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (1-12, 0-6 CUNYAC) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-6, 26-16, 25-20), before downing the Cardinals of York College (4-14, 1-6 CUNYAC), also in straight sets, 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-20).
With their pair of wins today, the Bulldogs reach the 10-win plateau for the first time since 2006; when Brooklyn finished the season at 10-13 overall, 5-4 CUNYAC. Today's victories also keep the Bulldogs in the hunt for a top-four seed in the conference tournament and the right to host a quarterfinal matchup.
“The games were great today,” said junior captain Caitlin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood). “Our energy levels were a little sporadic at first, but once we kept them up, we were able to make some great plays. We were very happy to come out with two wins as the host of today's CUNYAC Multi-Match.”
In their opening game win over CSI, Brooklyn was led by the serving of freshman Jillian Escobar (Queens Village, NY/Francis Lewis), who totaled 10 service aces in the match. Junior Colette Dragon (Spring Valley, NY/Spring Valley) had six kills, while freshman Amanda Fiore (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) helped set the offense with 11 assists.
The Bulldogs would continue their dominate play on the day against the Cardinals, as freshman Maritza Morency (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Nouveau College Bird) recorded a game-high 10 kills, to go with eight digs. Fiore once again paced the offense with 31 assists, to go along with six service aces; while McMullen chipped in with five service aces of her own. Escobar helped the cause with nine kills, while Dragon finished the afternoon with eight kills.
“We came out really strong against York,” said Fiore. “We were determined to get the sweep and get back on the winning track after not playing up to our full potential the past couple of games.”
“I'm really excited our freshmen were able to step up their games today, especially Morency,” said Head Coach Joanne Riggs. “With her skills on defense and offense, she will truly become a powerful force once she puts it all together. Overall, I'm happy with the way the team was able to stay focused and keep their determination to win both games today. However, there is still a lot of season left to play and we must continue to get better and work harder to reach our goal this season, which is to have a successful post-season.”
