Jamaica, NY---The sixth seeded Brooklyn College Women's Tennis team's (7-7) 2010 season came to an end on Tuesday evening in the CUNYAC/HSS Championship, as the Bulldogs attempt at a quarterfinal round upset was stopped short by third seeded York College (8-8). The Cardinals won the deciding No. 3 singles match to eventually edge Brooklyn, 5-4, advancing to the semifinal round at the National Tennis Center on Friday.
York will play seventh seeded Baruch College, who upset second seeded the College of Staten Island in their quarterfinal match.
Brooklyn took an early 2-1 lead in the match winning two of the three doubles matches. Senior captain Diana Derks (Frankfurt, Germany/Herlong) teamed up with Maria Sanz (Far Rockaway, NY/Bishop Ford) to down the pairing of Nicole Jones and Amba Chanoine, 8-5, in No. 1 Doubles, while the duo of Diana Rafailova (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) and Gianna Gelosi (North Babylon, NY/North Babylon) defeated Allana Wilson and Nina Olladikankwu, 8-6, in No. 2 Doubles.
Sanz and Gelosi would also do their part in singles action, picking up victories in No. 1 and No. 4 Singles, respectively. Sanz easily handled Wilson, 6-1, 6-0; while Gelosi came from behind to beat Olladikankwu, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Tied at four games apiece, the match came down to third singles, where Chanoine picked up the hard fought win over Rafailova, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, giving the host Cardinals the 5-4 victory and a trip to the semifinals of the CUNYAC Championship.
"I can't put into words how proud I am of this team," said BC Head Coach Ahmad Odetalla. " We played exceptionally well, but unfortunately York was the better team tonight."
Coach Odetalla and his young squad will look to improve on their 2010 effort next fall. The team only loses one player to graduation, senior Diana Derks.
