Women’s Volleyball Preps for CUNYAC Quarterfinal Round

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team capped off a successful 2010 campaign that saw the team post a seven-win improvement from a year ago, finishing the season with an even 11-11 overall record; while going 5-4 in the CUNY Athletic Conference (CUNYAC). Brooklyn will now turn its attention to the postseason, as the fifth seeded Bulldogs will travel to the Bronx, NY to take on the fourth seeded Lightning of Lehman College on Tuesday, November 2nd at 7:00 pm in their quarterfinal match of the 2010 CUNYAC/Emblem Health Women's Volleyball Championship.

Brooklyn and Lehman are no strangers this season, as the quarterfinal match will mark the third time this year that these schools will play one another. In their first meeting back on October 8th on a neutral court at the College of New Rochelle Tri-Match, the Lightning got the better of the Bulldogs, taking the match 3-1 (25-14, 25-22, 12-25, 25-20). Then on October 19th on Brooklyn's home court at the West Quad Center Gymnasium, Lehman once again got the upper hand over Brooklyn, this time downing the Bulldogs in a five-set thriller, 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-8). The Bulldogs will look to avenge their pair of losses to the Lightning by ending Lehman's season in the quarterfinals and advancing to the semifinals, where the winner of the #1 Hunter College / #8 College of Staten Island quarterfinal match will await. Both the semifinals and final will be held on Friday, November 5th at Hunter.

With the influx of new players on the 2010 BC Women's Volleyball team (six total), Head Coach Joanne Riggs has relied heavily on her team captain, junior middle hitter Caitlin McMullen (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood), to provide solid veteran leadership. McMullen has done just that in leading the young Bulldogs to their first double-digit win season since 2006. This year, McMullen ranks third on the team in kills with 139; while her 39 blocks on the season is best on the team. Her .246 hitting percentage ranks her fourth in the conference.

A trio of freshmen in outside hitters Maritza Morency (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Nouveau College Bird) and Jillian Escobar (Queens Village, NY/Francis Lewis) and setter Amanda Fiore (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner) have all made an instant impact to the team's success this season. Morency has totaled a team-best 147 kills on the year, while Escobar is right behind her with 145 kills. Escobar is also second in service aces with 54, while Morency is second on the team in digs with 205. Fiore has paced the offense this season with 509 assists, while also registering a team-high 75 aces.

Within the CUNYAC, Fiore ranks first in service aces and fourth in assists; while Escobar is third in service aces and Morency is eighth in digs. Nationally in Division III, Fiore is currently ranked third in aces per set (1.06), while Escobar is 19th in aces per set (0.75). As a team, the Bulldogs are ranked seventh in the country in aces per set (3.4).

For their efforts this season, Fiore and Escobar have each been honored by the conference as the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, with Escobar winning the award once and Fiore earning the award on five occasions.

Other first year players who have made their mark on the team this season have been junior transfer right side hitter Colette Dragon (Spring Valley, NY/Spring Valley) and senior libero Noelle Benson (Ontario, CA/Ontario). Dragon, a transfer from Borough of Manhattan Community College, ranks fourth on the team in kills with 135; while Benson leads the team with 214 digs, ranking her sixth in the CUNYAC.
