Purchase, NY --- The Brooklyn College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader today against the Purchase College Panthers, dropping the first game 4-0, before taking game two 3-2. The Bulldogs are now 5-1 on the year, while the Panthers go to 2-3 overall.
In the opener, Purchase used a three-run third inning to take control of the game. Abigal Katz began the rally with a one-out single before stealing second. Jennie Angelone would then draw a walk with two outs to put runners on first and second. Meghan Lalonde followed with an RBI single to bring home Katz for the first run of the game. Lalonde then stole second, which allowed Angelone to also steal home to score the second run. Mariel Perez's RBI single would score Lalonde for the third run.
The Panthers would tack on their fourth and final run in the bottom of the fifth on a Jillian Lucas home run.
Lindsay Froman silenced the Brooklyn bats tossing a one-hit complete game shut out, allowing three walks, while striking out five. Sophomore
Nicole Barrasso (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) took the loss, giving up four runs on six hits, while giving up a walk and striking out four.
In game two, Brooklyn got on the board early scoring a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly from senior
Jenna Ferrara (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) that brought home junior
Danielle Maresca (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison), who had reached base on an error. The Bulldogs lead would not last long as the Panthers answered back scoring two runs in their half of the first. After reaching base on an error, Lucas came around to score on an RBI triple by Angelone. An error would allow Angelone to also score on the play.
The score would remain 2-1 until the top of the fifth when Maresca's RBI single brought home junior
Ashley Allen (Sunnyside, NY/WC Bryant) to tie the game at 2 apiece. The Bulldogs would then score the go-ahead and eventual winning run in the sixth on a costly Panther error. With one out, sophomore
Samantha Lombardi (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht) singled to reach base and then moved to third and scored on a squeeze bunt from senior
Miriam Alicea (Brooklyn, NY/Fashion Industries).
The staring pitchers from game one would duel again in the nightcap, but it was Barrasso who was able to get the best of Froman the second time around, as Barrasso tossed seven strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on just three hits, while striking out four. Froman also went the distance, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits, while walking three and striking out one.
The Bulldogs are back in action this Tuesday, March 23rd, when Brooklyn will be on the road again to take on Rutgers-Newark in non-conference action. First pitch is slated for 4:00 pm.
