Morro Grand Slam Not Enough As Softball Drops Doubleheader To Hunter

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Softball Squad (5-3, 2-2 CUNYAC) got a huge grand slam from freshman Lisa Morrow (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) to give them a 4-2 lead in game two of today's doubleheader, but it would not be enough as Hunter would mount a rally in the bottom half of the inning and seize control, sweeping the Bulldogs on the day.

In game one pitching and defense played a much bigger role as Hunter held a 3-0 lead going into the fifth inning.  Brooklyn started the top of the inning with a two-run rally, capped off by RBI singles from Norah Marley (Bishop Kearney / Rockaway, NY) and Danielle Maresca (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY).  The two-spot cut the lead to a manageable 3-2 deficit heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Hunter came right back with a run of their own as Jacqueline Frank (Stella Maris / Beach Channel, NY) led off the inning with a deep home run to left center, extending the lead to 4-2.  The Hawks would add two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, winning the first game by a 6-2 score.

In game two Hunter got two early runs as Frank hit another deep home run, this time a two-run shot, in the bottom of the first to give the Hawks the 2-0 advantage.

The score would remain 2-0 until the top of the third as pitcher Nicole Barrasso (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) led off the inning with a walk.  Marley then reached on an error and Maresca was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Morrow to pop a grand slam right down the left field line to give the Bulldogs the 4-2 advantage.

Hunter would escape the inning without further damage and then answer in the bottom half of the inning with a tremendous 11-run rally, in which they knocked 3 singles, 2 doubles a triple and a home run.  The Bulldogs did not help their effort, committing 4 errors in the inning.

Barrasso got both starts for BC, getting losses in both, while Hunter's Stephanie Damroth (West Babylon / West Babylon, NY) and Lauren Stensland (West Babylon / Babylon, NY) picked up a win a piece.

Brooklyn's Samantha Lombardi (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) was a combined 3 for 5 on the day with a home run, a walk and 2 runs batted in.

Frank led the way for the Hawks with an outstanding day at the plate, going 5 for 8 with 2 home runs, 7 runs batted in and 5 runs scored.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Tuesday, March 30th when they host New Jersey City University at 2:00 pm.
