Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Softball Team (7-3, 4-2 CUNYAC) swept conference rival York College (0-6, 0-2 CUNYAC) this afternoon, 14-0, 9-8, in front of their home fans at Monsignor Crawford Field.
Brooklyn cruised in game one as
Nicole Barrasso (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) pitched a no-hitter, striking out nine, as the Bulldogs shutout York in a five-inning decision.
After scoring a pair of runs in the first, right fielder
Jenna Ferrara (James Madison / Brooklyn, NY) led off the second with a home run over the left-field fence, giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. The blast sparked a 5-run inning in which
Lisa Morro (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) and
Danielle Brovakos (James Madsion / Brooklyn, NY) each had RBI singles.
Ferrara was the offensive star for Brooklyn, going 3 for 3, adding a single and an RBI double to her solo home run.
Game Two was an exciting game that saw Brooklyn take a 4-0 lead in the first inning as
Tess Studholme (Notre Dame / Kent, England) hit a 3-run home run way over the left field fence to start things off.
Miriam Alicea (Fashion Industries / Brooklyn, NY) tripled and scored on a throwing error later in the inning to cap the Bulldog rally.
York came back in the second with a 5-run rally of their own to take a 5-4 lead. The big hit for the Cardinals came from leftfielder Brittany Patalano (Grover Cleveland / Providence, RI), who doubled off the right field fence, driving in the 4th and 5th runs for York.
Brooklyn capitalized on some poor York defense in the bottom of the second to retake the lead, 6-5.
It was then Brooklyn's turn to mishandle some easy plays in the field as two errors led to three unearned runs for the Cardinals in the top half of the third, handing York the lead at 8-6.
At this point both pitchers settled down and each team made some sparkling plays in the field. Brooklyn's next seven batters were sent down in order, until with one out in the bottom of the fifth, a Studholme single got the BC bats going again.
Samantha Lombardi (New Utrecht / Brooklyn, NY) followed with an RBI double and then scored on a groundout later in the inning to tie the game at eight.
The score would remain tied until the bottom of the seventh, when Lombardi reached on an error. Alicea would then pop up to the catcher on an attempted bunt. Lombardi, who was running on the play, was almost doubled up at first but slid in just before the throw arrived. Lombardi then stole second with
Annie Brown (Bishop Kearney / Brooklyn, NY) at the plate. Brown grounded out to second and Lombardi made a break for third. The York first basemen, Thessaly Belizario (Paul Robeson / Brooklyn, NY), threw high to third and Lombardi scored on the error, winning the game for Brooklyn, 9-8.
Brooklyn will be back in action on Friday, when they will take on Old Westbury in an afternoon doubleheader at the Long Island campus. First pitch is scheduled for 12 pm.
