Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team lost the opener of its non-conference doubleheader with Saint Joseph's College (Brooklyn Campus), 6-2, and tied the nightcap due to darkness, 3-3, this afternoon at Monsignor Crawford Field. The Bulldogs are now 14-11-1 on the season, while the Bears move to 15-8-1.
St. Joseph's took advantage of a Brooklyn throwing error to score the first run of the game in the top of the second, as the Bulldogs attempted to throw out Caitlyn Kakavas, who was advancing to third on a passed ball. Kakavas was hit by a pitch to reach base and later stole second.
The Bears would tack on two more runs in the top of the third on a pair of RBI singles from Kakavas and Emily Palmieri.
Brooklyn would get on the board in its half of the third on an RBI triple from
Danielle Maresca (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison) that found the gap between the center and right fielders to score
Kirsten Ingenito (Woodhaven, NY/Martin Luther). Ingenito came into the game as a pinch-runner for
Nicole Barrasso (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht), who had earlier singled to reach base.
Maresca would continue her clutch hitting and cut the deficit to 3-2 on an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to drive home
Norah Marley (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney), who had singled to reach base.
St. Joe's would put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs aided by a pair of Bulldog errors.
Alyson Chiaramonte (8-3) picked up the victory going the complete game, allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out six over seven innings. Her counterpart, Barrasso (11-10) took the tough luck loss, allowing six runs (two earned) on 10 hits, walking two and fanning five over seven innings.
The Bulldogs would jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the second game, taking advantage of a Bears fielding miscue, as it was Maresca who again jump started the Brooklyn offense with another RBI triple that plated Marley.
Ashley Allen (Sunnyside, NY/William C. Bryant) also had a big hit in the rally with an RBI double that brought home
Samantha Lombardi (Brooklyn, NY/New Utrecht).
St. Joseph's would answer with a three-run rally of its own in the top of the third, as Palmieri drew a bases loaded walk, while Jillian Troise and Mabel Vargas each drove home a run with RBI singles.
The game would be called after five innings due to darkness, ending in a 3-3 tie.
Brooklyn returns to action this Saturday, April 17th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Bronxville, NY to take on Sarah Lawrence College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon.
