Bulldogs Bully Bloodhounds To Improve To 4-0

Box Score

Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball Team (4-0, 3-0 CUNYAC) played their first home match of the 2010 season, cruising to a 3-set victory over conference foe John Jay (1-5, 1-2 CUNYAC), 25-15, 25-11, 25-22.

Entering the match, the Bulldogs were undefeated in three matches and therefore expectations were high in the West Quad Center for tonight's home opener.

"The festive atmosphere of the pre-game party and the debut of our wonderful new mascot gave our team lots of energy," said Head Coach Joanne Riggs.

The team did not disappoint as their energy propelled them to a 13-3 lead in the opening set.  The Bloodhounds tried to stay competitve, as the teams traded points over the next few minutes as the score ballooned to 16-6, but BC proved to be too much, winning the set 25-15.  Brooklyn dominated the team
stats for the set, owning the advantage in kills, 11-4.

"The team came out strong and focused," said Coach Riggs. "It was clear to everyon that the Bulldogs are ready to play when we step on the court."

The second set was not as close as BC dominated from beginning to end, winning 25-11, while putting away 8 kills and hitting for a .267 percentage.  John Jay did not record a kill in the set.  The third set saw John Jay take a 22-21 lead late in the set, however the home Bulldogs came right back with the final four points of the set to sweep the best of five match.

Freshman outside hitter Jillian Escobar (Francis Lewis / Queens Village) was impressive in her first game at West Quad, notching match-highs of 11 kills and 5 aces.

Reigning CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Amanda Fiore (Susan E. Wagner / Staten Island, NY) had a match-high with 14 assists.  Junior Caitlin McMullen (Midwood / Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with 6 kills for the Bulldogs.

John Jay was led by Justyna Kopec (Franklin D. Roosevelt / Nowa Deba, Poland), who had team-highs of 4 kills and 7 digs.

The win is the third consecutive win in the CUNYAC as the squad swept Medgar Evers and City Tech over the weekend, placing them in a tie for first place with Hunter.

Brooklyn will look to remain undefeated as they travel to borough rival, St. Joseph's College, on Thursday at 7:30 pm.
