Hartsville, SC --- The Brooklyn College Softball team was swept in its 2011 season opening doubleheader earlier today against Division II Coker College, members of Conference Carolinas, at Saleeby-Stokes Field in Hartsville, South Carolina. The Bulldogs dropped the opener 9-0 and the second game 15-1. BC drops to 0-2 on the season, while the Cobras improve to 2-0 on the year.
Coker got on the board early in game one scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Sydney Weatherford got the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run single to left field, which brought home Jacline Poole and Haleigh Rogers. Rogers also had an RBI single through the right side to open the scoring, which platted Sarah Rountree, who led off the inning with a single to left center.
The game remained 3-0 until the bottom of the fourth, as the Cobras scored another three runs, taking advantage of a pair of Brooklyn errors, to go up 6-0. Coker would end the game in the following inning by run differential, scoring three runs in the bottom on the fifth.
Rountree had a solid game for the Cobras going 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI and three runs scored. Rogers went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Weatherford also drove in two runs in the game.
Becky Dillon (1-0) picked up the victory tossing four shutout innings, allowing just two hits and a walk, while striking out four batters.
Making her collegiate debut for the Bulldogs, freshman
Marie Oneto (0-1) took the loss going 4.2 innings allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits, while walking one and fanning four. Juniors
Samantha Lombardi and
Antoinette Brown each had a hit for BC.
Game two would also end by run differential, as the Cobras again jumped out to an early lead with a six-run first inning. Coker would tack on another five runs in the bottom of the second and four more in the bottom of the third, as the Cobras cruised to a 15-1 win.
Bri Jacobs had a big game for Coker driving home five runs going 3-for-3. Gina Easler also went a perfect 3-for-3 for the game, with two RBI and three runs scored. Rountree also drove in two runs, while Rogers and Poole each scored three times. Rogers finished the game going 3-for-3.
Sydney Greenwalt picked up the win in the nightcap tossing three innings, while allowing one run on three hits and striking out three. Her counterpart freshman
Tara Diesel (0-1) took the loss allowing 15 runs (14 earned) on 12 hits, while walking five and striking out two over three innings.
Freshman Katherine Fuentes drove home the lone run of the game for the Bulldogs with an RBI single to right field, which platted sophomore
Lissette Andares, who doubled to get on base.
Brooklyn will continue its 2011 season opening weekend Southern trip, tomorrow, Saturday, February 19th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Fayetteville, NC to take on the Monarchs of Methodist University. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.
