Jersey City, NJ---The Brooklyn College Softball team (2-6) took to the road on Friday afternoon, traveling over the Holland Tunnel to take on New Jersey City University (6-4) in Jersey City, NJ. The Bulldogs, who rode a two-game win streak into today, were unsuccessful against the host Gothic Knights, falling 10-2 in game one and 8-0 in game two.
NJCU struck first scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning on a two-out RBI single from Marissa Bariso that brought home Jess Mucerino. Mucerino got on base with a single through the right side and later stole both second and third base to get into scoring position.
The Bulldogs would answer right back in the top of the second tying the game at 1-1 on an RBI groundout by
Samantha Lombardi that scored
Tara Diesel. Diesel drew a leadoff walk to start the inning and later advanced to second on a single from
Stephanie Caravello and would move to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Ashley Allen.
The Gothic Knights would tack on another run in the bottom of the second, benefiting from a Brooklyn fielding error, to take a 2-1 lead. With two outs in the inning, Alexandra DiIorio reached base on an error by the first basemen and would come around to score on an RBI single from Megan Ginter.
The game would remain 2-1 in favor of NJCU until the top of the fourth, as the Bulldogs tied the game at 2 all taking advantage of the Gothic Knights erratic pitching. Caravello and Allen opened the inning drawing a pair of walks. Both players would later advance a base on a wild pitch and Caravello would come around to score on the second wild pitch of the inning.
A Rebecca Satz RBI double to left center in the bottom of the fourth, which scored Mucerino, would regain the lead for NJCU, 3-2. The Gothic Knights would later blow the game open with a seven-run inning in the bottom of the sixth, ending the game via run rule. Mucerino had the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run triple, while Janissa Cardona's two-run single capped the scoring to end the game early.
Ashley O'Beirne (4-2) picked up the win for NJCU tossing six solid innings, allowing two runs on three hits, while walking six and striking out five batters. Her counterpart,
Marie Oneto (1-3) took the loss allowing 10 runs (9 earned) on 13 hits, while walking two and striking out four over 5.2 innings of work.
In the nightcap, Mucerino (2-2) silenced the BC bats with a complete game shutout, surrendering six hits, while walking two and striking out two. Diesel took the loss (1-3), allowing eight runs (five earned) on seven hits, while walking seven and striking out one over 5.1 innings.
The Gothic Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 lead plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a leadoff homerun by Ginter. NJCU would later add two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, one run in the bottom of the fifth and another two runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early by run rule.
Brooklyn will look to bounce back tomorrow, Saturday, March 19th, as the Bulldogs return home to take on Purchase in another non-conference doubleheader. It will be the team's home opener at Monsignor Crawford Field and all BC fans are encouraged to attend. The first game will begin at 12:00 pm with the second game to follow.
