Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Softball Team (3-7) split an afternoon doubleheader with visiting Purchase College (3-1) on Saturday afternoon. After dropping game one 11-7, the Bulldogs came back in game two to top the Panthers 9-6.
The Panthers got on the board first in the opener, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. After back-to-back singles from Jillian Lucas and Christine Leo and a walk from Erika Stahl loaded the bases, Lindsay Froman's RBI single brought home Lucas for the first run of the game. Leo would score the second run as Veronica Slattery was hit by a pitch.
The Bulldogs would cut their deficit to 2-1 in their half of the first on an RBI single from
Allison Donovan that scored
Stephanie Caravello, who blasted a triple to get on base.
The game would remain 2-1 in favor of Purchase until the top of the third, as the Panthers would score two more runs benefiting from a BC fielding miscue to push their advantage to 4-1. Brooklyn would answer back in their half of the third on an RBI triple from
Tara Diesel that brought home Caravello, who singled to reach base to make the score 4-2.
The BC bats would come alive in the bottom of the fifth, as the Bulldogs rallied with a five-run inning taking advantage of a Purchase error to take a 7-4 lead. Diesel would strike again, this time with an RBI double, while
Lisa Morro and
Ashley Allen each had an RBI single. Diesel finished the game going 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Caravello also went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored.
The Brooklyn lead would not last long as the Panthers roared back with a seven run inning in the top of the sixth to take an 11-7 lead. Purchase was aided by three BC errors in the inning. Alyse LaPadula and Lucas had the biggest hits of the rally, as LaPadula began the offensive surge with a two-run single, while Lucas brought home two runs with a triple that cleared the bases.
Froman (2-0) picked up the win for Purchase, going the distance allowing seven runs on 12 hits, while walking three and striking out one over seven innings of work. Her counterpart
Marie Oneto (1-4) pitched five innings in the loss, surrendering 11 runs (four earned) on eight hits, while walking five and striking out seven.
The Bulldogs would strike first in the nightcap, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Donovan led off the inning with a double and would come around to score on an RBI double off the bat of Morro for the first run of the game. Morro would score on an RBI single from Katherine Fuentes, while
Antoinette Brown capped the scoring with an RBI single that plated
Samantha Lombardi.
Purchase would answer back in the top of the third, as Lucas' RBI triple and Abigail Katz's RBI double cut the Panthers deficit to 3-2. BC would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the third taking advantage of a Purchase fielding error, to take a 5-2 lead.
The Panthers would not go down without a fight, however, as Purchase scored two runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 5-4 in favor of BC. The Bulldogs' offense would continue to produce as Brooklyn added another two runs in the bottom of the fourth to push their advantage to 7-4.
The game would remain 7-4 until the bottom of the sixth, as a Morro RBI double scored Donovan to make the game 8-4 in favor of the home Bulldogs. Donovan and Morro each had solid games, as Donovan went 3-for-4 in the game with three doubles, one RBI and three runs scored. Morro also went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
Purchase would have one last chance to force extra innings, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to cut their deficit to 8-6, however that's as close as the Panthers would get, as the Bulldogs would come out victorious to earn the twin bill split.
Diesel (2-3) picked up the win tossing all seven innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits, while walking three and striking out seven. Stahl (1-1) allowed eight runs (six earned) on 12 hits, while walking one and striking out three.
Brooklyn returns to action on Wednesday, March 23rd, as the Bulldogs will take on the Cardinals of York College in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm in Jamaica, NY.
