Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team swept a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) doubleheader over the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Monday Afternoon at Monsignor Crawford Field by scores of 9-2 and 12-4. With the wins, the Bulldogs improve to 5-8-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play, while the Bloodhound s fall to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Senior
Ashley Allen swung a hot bat in the twinbill, as she feasted on the Bloodhounds pitching going a combined 4-for-5 at the plate with 8 RBI and three runs scored.
In the opener, Allen got the Bulldogs on the board in the top of the second with a two-run double that plated both freshmen
Allison Donovan and Katherine Fuentes. Allen would later come around to score on a wild pitch as Brooklyn would total four runs in the inning to go up 4-0.
Allen continued the Bulldogs offensive surge helping to power a three run third inning with a two-run triple, that brought home both Fuentes and freshman
Meagan Cranston. Allen would later come around the score on a sacrifice fly from junior
Antoinette Brown to put Brooklyn up 7-0.
John Jay would get on the board in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Christina Perez that scored Angela Lam who doubled to get on base. BC's freshman
Tara Diesel would answer in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun over the left field wall to put the Bulldogs back up by seven, 8-1. Brooklyn would add another run in the top of the sixth, while the Bloodhounds scored another run in the bottom of the sixth, as the Bulldogs would go on to the 9-2 win.
Freshman
Marie Oneto (2-5) picked up the win going the distance, allowing two runs on 11 hits, while walking one and striking out eight over seven innings. Her counterpart, Lam also went the full seven innings, allowing nine runs on 11 hits, while walking five and fanning one.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs once again jumped out to an early lead scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. The five-run rally was highlighted by a two-run homerun from Allen that scored Fuentes and an RBI double from Donovan that plated freshman
Nicole Butera who came into the game as a pinch runner for Diesel who led off the inning with a double to center field. Brooklyn took advantage of three John Jay errors, to go along with five hits to plate the five runs.
The Bloodhounds would answer with a run in their half of the second, however, the Bulldogs would tack on four more runs in the top of the third to take a commanding 9-1 lead. Cranston and Brown each had RBI singles, while Allen drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to center.
BC would put the game out of reach in the top of the fourth inning adding three more runs to take a 12-1 advantage. Diesel and Allen both had RBI singles in the inning. The Bloodhounds would add a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth; however, the game would be cut short after the fifth inning due to the run rule. Brooklyn benefited from nine John Jay errors in the game.
Diesel picked up the win to even her record at 3-3 allowing four runs on eight hits, while walking four and striking out six over five innings. Lana Kovac took the loss, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on nine hits, while walking two and striking out two over three innings of work.
Brooklyn will be back in action on Saturday, April 2nd, as the Bulldogs will take on the reigning CUNYAC champion Bearcats of Baruch College. First pitch is scheduled for 10:00 am at the CSI Softball Complex in Staten Island, NY.
