Bulldogs Drop CUNYAC Championship Opener; Will Play Elimination Game Later Today at 2:30 pm

Staten Island, NY --- The #4 Brooklyn College Softball team dropped the opening game of the 2011 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Pepsi Softball Championships to the #1 seeded Dolphins of the College of Staten Island this morning, by a score of 10-2.

With the loss, the Bulldogs (14-17-1) will enter the elimination round, as BC will take on the loser of the #2 Baruch College/#3 Hunter College match-up, which is slated for a 2:30 pm start time. With their win, CSI (21-11) will enter through to the winner's bracket and take on the winner between Baruch and Hunter in the fourth and final game of the day at 4:30 pm today.

The Dolphins jumped out to an early lead notching five runs in the bottom of the first inning taking advantage of a pair of BC fielding miscues. Kristi Dillon led off the inning with a single and later stole second. She would come around to score the first run of the game on an RBI double to center field from Kaitlyn Flynn. Flynn would come around to score on a wild pitch. Stephanie Solari had the other big hit in the inning for CSI, an RBI single to left that plated Raechel Strobel. Solari would later score stealing home.

CSI would later tack on three more runs in their half of the third inning to take an 8-0 advantage, as Flynn led off the inning with a double to left field and would come around to score on an RBI double from Joanna Tepedino. Tepedino would score on an RBI single from Strobel. Strobel would also score in the inning on a fielder's choice from Michelle Ferraiuolo.

The Dolphins scored their final two runs of the game in the fourth, as Flynn would strike again with an RBI double to center field that scored Diana Stout. Flynn would score on an RBi single from Strobel to make it 10-0 in favor of the home team. Flynn finished the game going 3-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Strobel also drove in a pair of runs going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored.

The visiting Bulldogs would answer with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth as BC took advantage of a CSI error that allowed senior Ashley Allen to plate the first Brooklyn run. Classmate Danielle Maresca would drive home BC's second run with an RBI single up the middle that drove home junior Antoinette Brown. Freshman Stephanie Caravello went 2-for-3 on the day for the Bulldogs.

Solari picked up the win for CSI, going five solid innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, while walking one. For BC, freshman Tara Diesel took the loss allowing 10 runs (six earned) on nine hits, walking three and striking out two.
