Purchase, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team picked up a key non-conference doubleheader sweep this afternoon on the road against regional rival SUNY Purchase. BC took the opening game 8-0 and the second game 6-5. With the wins, the Bulldogs improve to 4-2 overall on the season, while the Panthers drop to 1-3 overall on the year.
Coming in the opener, BC scored three runs in the third and the fifth innings en route to its 8-0 shutout victory.
Kimberly Brennan and
Marie Oneto pitched three innings apiece to complete the shutout. Brennan started the game and allowed just one hit and a walk, to go along with two strikeouts; while Oneto closed the game to earn the win, scattering three hits to go along with four strikeouts. Their counterpart, Lindsay Froman, took the loss allowing eight runs on 10 hits, while walking three and striking out three over six innings of work.
Kim Klonklewski had a big day at the plate at the leadoff spot going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Tara Diesel also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while
Stephanie Caravello went 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs would escape with a 6-5 win to complete the twinbill sweep.
The Panthers would strike first scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 advantage. Purchase would maintain its 1-0 lead until the top of the third inning, when the Brooklyn bats exploded once again with a four-run rally to go up 4-1. A pair of RBI doubles from Caravello and Diesel, along with a two-run double from
Maria Mantagas helped fuel the rally.
The Bulldogs would tack on runs in the fifth and seventh innings to go up 6-1.
Purchase would not go down lightly; however, as the home team attempted a late-game rally in the final inning.
Juliet-Rain Pagan and Alyse LaPadula began the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back singles. Pagan would later score on an RBI single from Christina Sanderson with one out, while LaPadula and Sanderson would come around to score on a key two-run double from Abigail Katz. Katz would also score on a single from Rachael Popovic, which cut the Panthers deficit to 6-5.
After a single from Christine Leo put runners on first and second for Purchase, the Bulldogs defense came up strong with a game-ending double play; as Mariel Perez reached base on a fielder's choice, which led to Leo being recorded out at second and Popovic being tagged out at home on a throw from the shortstop
Allison Donovan to catcher
Geena Bell who blocked the plated and laid the tag down, preventing the game-tying run from scoring and ending the game.
Brennan picked up the win for BC, tossing seven innings, while allowing five runs on eight hits, to go with three walks and five strikeouts. Her counterpart Leo took the loss, surrendering six runs on nine hits, while walking four and striking out one over seven innings.
