Old Westbury, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader against regional rival SUNY College at Old Westbury this afternoon, by scores of 3-1 and 6-2, at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex in Old Westbury, NY.
The Bulldogs drop to 4-4 with the pair of losses, while the Panthers improve to 5-3 with the twinbill sweep.
The opening game featured a pitcher's duel between Brooklyn's
Marie Oneto and Old Westbury's Deborah Ciccarelli, as the game was scoreless through five innings.
BC would strike first scoring their lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Sophomore
Allison Donovan reached base with a two-out single to right field and later stole second to get into scoring position. Following a wild pitch that allowed Donovan to reach third base, she would come around to score on an RBI single from junior
Norah Marley.
The Panthers would answer quickly with a three-run rally in their half of the sixth. After a Jennifer Jean single to left started off the inning, Samantha Siegler doubled to left to bring home Jean and tie the game. A pair of RBI doubles from both Alyssa Clancy and Lauren Isaac capped off the rally to give the home team its 3-1 lead, which would be the eventual final score as Brooklyn would be unable to answer in the seventh and final inning.
Oneto took the loss allowing three runs on eight hits to go along with two strikeouts in six innings; while Ciccarelli picked up the win allowing one run on seven hits in seven innings of work, to go with two walks and five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Panthers got on the board first scoring a run in the bottom of the second by taking advantage of a Brooklyn fielding miscue and later tacked on three more runs in the third, to take a 4-0 lead. BC would cut its deficit to 4-2 with a two-run sixth; however, Old Westbury would answer with a two-run sixth of their own, which saw Brooklyn commit three errors, en route to its eventual 6-2 win and doubleheader sweep.
Sophomore
Tara Diesel took the loss for Brooklyn, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits, while walking three and striking out one in 2.1 innings of work. Classmate Oneto closed out the game tossing the final 3.2 innings, while allowed two unearned runs on three hits, to go along with one walk and one strikeout.
Clancy picked up the win for Old Westbury, surrendering two unearned runs on three hits, while walking one and striking out eight in seven innings of work.
Brooklyn will be back in action on Wednesday, March 21st, as the Bulldogs will host the Rams of Farmingdale State College in BC's 2012 home opener. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 4:00 pm at Monsignor Crawford Field located on Avenue U and 59th Street in Brooklyn, NY.
