Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College Softball Team saw their first CUNYAC competition of the 2012 season in John Jay College, and were impressive in sweeping the Bloodhounds 6-2, 5-2, in an afternoon doubleheader at Monsignor Crawford Field on Tuesday.
With the wins, BC improves to 7-5 on the season and 2-0 in CUNYAC play, while John Jay falls to 3-5 and 0-2 in the conference.
Brooklyn starting pitcher
Marie Oneto threw both games, pitching 14 consecutive innings while only yielding four runs and earning two wins on the day to improve her season record to 5-2.
"Oneto was a workhorse for us today," said Head Coach Bill Dumont of his ace pitcher.
In game one, John Jay got on the board first, as a Nelly Vega base hit to left field got under the glove of
Meagan Cranston, allowing Vega to advance to second. Oneto was able to retire the following three batters, but Vega scored on a Bridgette Martinez ground out to give her team the 1-0 lead.
Brooklyn struck back in the bottom of the second as
Allison Donovan earned a one out walk to get things started. After a
Kimberly Brennan fly out,
Norah Marley was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second with two outs.
Nathalie DeJesus was called on to pinch hit for
Antoinette Brown, and delivered with an infield single, which loaded the bases for
Kim Konklewski. Konklewski singled, bringing home Donovan to tie the score.
Cranston, who was next to bat, made up for her earlier error with a big three-run double over the rightfielder's head to unload the bases and give her team a 4-1 lead.
That was all the cushion Oneto would need as she gave up only five hits and one earned run, while striking out five and not walking any batters in the complete game effort.
Konklewski and Cranston, the one and two hitters in the lineup, were the hitting stars in game one for the Bulldogs. Konklewski went three for four with an RBI, while Cranston was two for three with three runs batted in.
Game two saw a nightmarish start for the Bloodhounds as their second starting pitcher, Crystal Johnson, struck out the lead off hitter, Konklewski, only for the pitch to be mishandled by her catcher, Jennifer Varela, and Konklewski to advance to first base on the passed ball. This was the beginning of a two-run rally as
Stephanie Caravello and Donovan each had key singles.
Oneto started the game strong in the pitcher's circle, sending down nine of the first ten Bloodhounds she faced.
With their pitcher cruising, the Bulldogs tacked on three more runs in teh second inning as a Marley walk, followed by DeJesus and Konklewski singles, set the table for the big inning.
John Jay was able to get on the board in the fourth with a run, and then the Bloodhounds staged a serious threat in the top of the sixth as a Kaylee Fry double with two outs scored Vega to close the gap to 5-2. A Samantha Guillen single put runners on the corners and the tying run, Martinez, came up to bat, but Oneto reached back for something extra, striking her out swining to end the rally.
Konklewski and Caravello both had three hits in game two to lead BC, while Donovan was one for three with an RBI. Donovan was also busy at her shortstop position, registering three putouts and seven assists.
Brooklyn will be back on the field tomorrow as they host non-league opponent New Jersey City University for two games scheduled to begin at 3:15 pm.
