Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team split its non-conference doubleheader this afternoon at Monsignor Crawford Field against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. The Bulldogs took the opener 10-7, while the Gothic Knights won the second game by a score of 5-3.
BC moves to 8-6 overall on the season, while NJCU goes to 6-10 overall on the year.
The Bulldogs would strike first utilizing a seven-run inning in their half of the second inning.
Kim Konklewski's two-run single and
Maria Mantagas' two-run double helped to fuel the rally, while a fielding error by the catcher allowed pinch runner
Becky Ganley to score the first run of the game. RBI singles from
Meagan Cranston and
Stephanie Caravello also helped key the offensive output.
NJCU would get on the board in the top of the third with a solo homerun from Rebecca Satz. The Gothic Knights would tack on two more runs in the fourth to cut their deficit to 7-3. BC would answer with a run of their own in the fourth on an RBI double from Caravello that scored Cranston to put the home team up 8-3.
The Gothic Knights would continue to chip away at their deficit, as NJCU plated four runs in the fifth to make it 8-7 in favor of Brooklyn. However, that's as close as the visitors would get, as Konklewski's two-run triple brought home
Allison Donovan and
Kristina Bermudez to cap off the scoring, as the Bulldogs would go on to the 10-7 win.
Marie Oneto picked up the win for Brooklyn, while Ashley O'Beirne took the loss for NJCU.
In the nightcap, NJCU would strike first scoring a run in the first and second innings to take an early 2-0 advantage. The lead would not last long; however, as Brooklyn tacked on runs in the second and third innings to tie the game at 2-2.
The game would remain 2-2 until the fifth, when the Gothic Knights took control with a three-run rally to go up 5-2. A two-run single from Stephanie Gomez and an RBI single from Nicole Calixto helped fuel the rally.
Brooklyn would answer with an RBI single from
Kimberly Brennan in the fifth that scored Donovan to make it 5-3; however, the Bulldogs would be unable to complete their comeback attempt, as the game would end after six innings due to darkness.
Tara Diesel took the loss for Brooklyn, while Jess Mucerino picked up the win.
Brooklyn returns to action on Saturday, March 31st, as the Bulldogs will play host to conference rival Lehman College. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Monsignor Crawford Field in Brooklyn, NY.
