Brooklyn, NY --- For the second day in a row, the Brooklyn College Softball team split a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) doubleheader earlier today at Monsignor Crawford Field, this time against the Bearcats of Baruch College. The Bulldogs dropped the opener 5-1, before bouncing back to claim the split with a 7-2 win in game two.
With the split, Brooklyn moves to 10-10 overall on the season and 4-4 in the CUNYAC; while Baruch goes to 9-13 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
Coming in the opener, the visiting Bearcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Nicole Flint got Baruch on the board with an RBI single, while Toniann Donde drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly.
The Bearcats would take advantage of a costly Brooklyn error that extended the inning in the top of the third, as Flint's sacrifice fly brought home the third run of the game. Brooklyn would get on the board in their half of the third, as
Stephanie Caravello's RBI double plated
Kim Konklewski to cut the Bulldogs' deficit to 3-1.
Baruch would add two more runs in the top of the fourth to make it 5-1, as Olivia Auman led off the inning with a homerun, while Carmen Pagan-Colon later contributed with an RBI single to bring home the final run of the game.
Along with going 1-for-3 with two RBI, Flint (7-4) picked up the win for the Bearcats tossing seven solid innings, while allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out six. Her counterpart,
Marie Oneto (7-5) took the loss giving up five runs (four earned) on 10 hits, while allowing one walk and striking out two.
Melanie Pellegrino went a perfect 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Donde also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-3.
Konklewski, Caravello and
Kristina Bermudez all had two hits in game one for Brooklyn.
Game two featured a tight pitching duel early on as the game went scoreless until the bottom of the fourth, when the Bulldogs scored four runs on six hits.
Norah Marley got Brooklyn on the board with a two-run single that drove home both
Allison Donovan and
Kristina Bermudez. Later on in the inning, Konklewski capped off the four run rally with a two-run triple that plated Marley and
Antoinette Brown.
Baruch would quickly answer with a two-run homerun from Pellegrino in the top of the fifth to make it 4-2 in favor of the home Bulldogs.
The game would remain 4-2 until the bottom of the sixth, when Brooklyn tacked on three insurance runs on four hits.
Meagan Cranston keyed the rally with a two-run triple that brought home Konklewski and Brown, while Cranston would come around to score on an RBI single from Caravello.
For the Bulldogs, Konklewski, Cranston, Donovan and Brown all had multi-hit games, as Brooklyn totaled 13 hits. Baruch's Holly Isenberg went 2-for-3 in the game.
After taking the loss in the opener, Oneto (8-5) came back to pick up the win in game two, tossing seven innings, while allowing two runs on eight hits, giving up one walk and adding three strikeouts. Her counterpart Deena Farrell (1-9) took the loss, giving up seven runs on 13 hits, while walking two and striking out two over six innings.
Brooklyn will be back in action tomorrow, Wednesday, April 11th, as the Bulldogs will be on the road to take on non-conference foe Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
