Softball Splits CUNYAC Doubleheader Against Lehman

Box Score Game 1

Box Score Game 2

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team earned a doubleheader split against City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival Lehman College earlier today at Monsignor Crawford Field.

The Bulldogs (9-9 overall, 3-3 CUNYAC) took the opener 7-0, while the Lightning (8-14 overall, 2-6 CUNYAC) bounced back in game two, 8-2, to pick up the split.

Coming in game one, BC scored all of its runs in its bottom half of the second inning. A two-run single from Meagan Cranston got the Bulldogs on the board, while a grand slam from Maria Mantagas later on in the inning broke the game open and gave Brooklyn a 6-0 lead. An RBI single from Tara Diesel capped off the seven run rally.

That's all the help that starting pitcher Marie Oneto (7-4) would need, as she tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits and striking out seven Lightning batters. Her counterpart, Natalie Martinez took the loss, allowing all seven runs, on eight hits, while walking four and striking out two over six innings of work.

In the second game, the Bulldogs would strike first again, as Mantags' RBI single in the bottom of the first plated Kim Konklewski.

The game would remain 1-0 in favor of BC until the top of the fourth, when Lehman's Janet Ortiz belted a solo homerun to lead off the inning. A Jelsey Cox RBI single later in the inning would give the Lightning its first lead of the game at 2-1, while the visitors would tack on their third run of the inning taking advantage of a Brooklyn throwing miscue that would have ended the inning, allowing Cox to score and make it 3-1.

Lehman would add on two more runs in the fifth on a pair of RBI singles from Genesis Batista and Cox, to go up 5-1.

Brooklyn would cut its deficit to 5-2 on an RBI single from Konklewski in the fifth that scored Nathalie DeJesus; however, that's a close as the Bulldogs would get, as the Lightning would add on three more runs in the top of the seventh to go on to its 8-2 victory.

Errors would be costly for the Bulldogs, as Brooklyn committed six errors in the game.

Norah Marley batted a perfect 3-for-3 in nightcap, while Konklewski also had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4.

Lehman's Sheila San Andres earned the victory for the Lighting, tossing seven strong innings, while allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out three.

Kimberly Brennan (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits, while walking two and striking out three in four innings of work. Oneto came in relief to pitch the final three innings, allowing four runs (two earned), while walking one and striking out three.

Brooklyn returns to action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 10th, as the Bulldogs will host another conference rival, Baruch College, at Monsignor Crawford Field on Avenue U and East 59th Street. First pitch is slated for 10:00 am.
