Old Westbury, NY --- The #6 Brooklyn College Softball team lost its First Round matchup of the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Championships to #3 SUNY College at Old Westbury by a score of 5-0.
The Panthers improve to 25-17 and advance to the double elimination round of the ECAC DIII Metro Championships against #2 Sage Colleges.
The game featured a tight pitchers duel early on between Brooklyn's
Marie Oneto and Old Westbury's Alyssa Clancy.
After three scoreless innings, the home Panthers would be the first to break through with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nicole Petrucci and Marissa Brightman began the inning with back-to-back singles to reach base. After a wild pitch allowed both runners to advance a base, Clancy came through to help her own cause with an RBI groundout that scored Petrucci for the first run of the game. Pinch hitter Lauren Isaac would later come through with an RBI single to right center that brought home Brightman to make it 2-0 in favor of Old Westbury.
The game would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when the Panthers used a three-run inning on four hits to help put the game away. With two outs, Jennifer Jean's two-run double to left field that plated both Samantha Siegler and Isaac was the key hit of the inning. Jean would also come around to score on an RBI single from Corrine Protasiewicz to cap off the three-run rally and give Old Westbury a 5-0 lead.
Clancy (17-10) silenced the Brooklyn bats, tossing seven shut out innings, allowing just five hits and two walks, to go along with nine strikeouts. Oneto (16-12), a 2012 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) All-Star Second Team selection, allowed five runs on eight hits, while fanning three over six innings of work.
Kim Konklewski, a 2012 CUNYAC All-Star First Team member, went 2-for-4 in the game for the Bulldogs, while
Meagan Cranston went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Nathalie DeJesus also had a hit for BC.
Brooklyn concludes its 2012 season with a 19-20 overall record.
With the Bulldogs losing just one player from this season's squad due to graduation, 2013 should be another exciting campaign for the BC Softball program.
