Lehman finishes the season with a 12-19 overall record.
Leading the way for BC was sophomore starting pitcher
Marie Oneto (14-9), who was solid in the circle, going the distance allowing just one unearned run on four hits, while walking one and striking out seven over seven innings of work. Her counterpart, Sheila San Andres (7-10), took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits, to go along with five walks and three strikeouts over six innings.
The Lightning struck first scoring a run in the opening inning, as Janet Oritz came around to score via a key Brooklyn error, to give Lehman the early momentum and a 1-0 lead.
However, the momentum would be short lived, as the Bulldogs answered quickly with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double from
Allison Donovan that plated
Stephanie Caravello to tie the game at 1-1.
“Motivation is what we give each other to keep our heads in the game and come together like the cardiac team that we are and fight till the end,” said Oneto
Brooklyn would add two more runs in the second, as
Tara Diesel and
Norah Marley both came around to score to give BC a 3-1 lead. Diesel scored on
Meagan Cranston's RBI single, while Marley scored on a fielder's choice.
The game would remain 3-1 in favor of the home Bulldogs until the bottom of the fifth, when Diesel's RBI double scored Donovan, extending Brooklyn's lead to 4-1.
BC added three more runs in the sixth to put the game away for good, as Donovan's single with the bases loaded drove home both
Antoinette Brown and
Kim Konklewski. Cranston also scored on the play on a fielding error by the Lehman defense, as the Bulldogs would go on to take the 7-1 final.
“Today was a huge win for us,” stated Donovan. “We are enjoying it now, but I know the whole team feels we have a lot of softball left to play. We are all very excited to be going back to CSI for the second year in a row and have the opportunity to show what we can do against the best teams in the league.”
Donovan and Cranston both had multi-hit games for BC, as Donovan went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored; while Cranston also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
San Andres went 2-for-4 for Lehman.
“It's nice to go to the championship round of the conference tournament for back-to-back years,” said head coach Bill Dumont. “We would like to keep this going.”
