Game 1 Box Score vs. CSI
Game 2 Box Score vs. Baruch
Staten Island, NY --- The #4 seed Brooklyn College Softball team began the 2012 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Applebee's Softball Championships by upsetting the top seed and host Dolphins of the College of Staten Island, 5-4, to advance to the winner's bracket. The Bulldogs fell to #3 Baruch College, 2-0, in the second game for both teams.
Baruch defeated #2 Hunter earlier in the day to advance to the winner's bracket.
Brooklyn will play CSI in a rematch, tomorrow, Saturday, May 5th at 12:00 pm. The Dolphins defeated Hunter to avoid elimination and advance to day two.
Game One Recap
BC was led by starting pitcher
Marie Oneto who picked up the win, tossing a complete game, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits, while walking seven and striking out one. Her counterpart, Victoria Procopio also went the distance, while taking the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. She also walked two and struck out one.
Brooklyn's
Katharine Fuentes had the key hit of the game for the visitors, with a two-run single in the top of the sixth, which scored both
Tara Diesel and
Allison Donovan.
Diesel and
Norah Marley both had a multi-hit game for the Bulldogs.
The Dolphins would strike first scoring a run in the bottom of the first, as Stephanie Solari's sacrifice fly scored Kristi Dillon to put CSI up 1-0. Dillon singled to lead off the inning and later advanced to third on
Kaitlyn Flynn's double.
Brooklyn answered quickly with a three-run rally in the top of the second. Helping to fuel the rally were back-to-back singles from Diesel and Marley to begin the inning. Oneto would then come in to pinch-run for Diesel, as Becky Ganely's sacrifice bunt advanced runners to second and third.
Antoinette Brown then followed with an RBI single through the left side that scored Oneto to tie the game at 1-1. BC would then take advantage of a costly CSI throwing error by the catcher that allowed both Marley and Brown to score, giving the visitors a 3-1 advantage.
The score would remain 3-1 until the top of the sixth, when three straight singles from Donovan, Diesel and Marley helped set up Fuentes' two-run single to put Brooklyn up 5-1.
The top seed and host Dolphins would not go down without a fight, as CSI answered with a three-run inning of their own in the bottom of the sixth, cutting its deficit to 5-4.
After a single from Danielle Ponsiglione and a pair of walks by Catherine Ebro and Christine DeCarlo loaded the bases, Samantha Tallarine drew a walk to bring home Ponsiglione. Ebro would then in to score on a passed while, while DeCarlo scored in the same sequence on an error.
Ponsiglione finished the game with a pair of hits.
The score would remain 5-4 in favor of the Bulldogs heading into the bottom of the seventh with the Dolphins looking to complete the come back win in their final at-bats. After CSI put its first two batters on, Oento beared down getting the next three outs to finish off the #1 seed, as Brooklyn would go on to advance to the winner's bracket.
Game Two Recap
The Bulldogs' second game featured a tight pitchers duel, as the match-up would remain scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Baruch plated two runs to take a 2-0 advantage.
Courtney White's RBI double to left field scored Maria Vlahopoulos for the first run of the game; while Chelsea DeGuzman came around to score on a throwing error.
That's all the run support that Baruch's Nicole Flint would need, as Flint tossed seven perfect innings to go along with four strikeouts. Oneto took the tough luck loss allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits over six innings.
