Women’s Volleyball Falls to Rutgers-Newark

Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team dropped a non-conference match earlier today against Rutgers-Newark in straight sets, 3-0 (25-9, 26-24, 25-17), at the West Quad Center. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 2-11 overall on the season, while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 8-9 overall on the year.

In the opening set, Rutgers-Newark jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and never looked back; as the Scarlet Raiders would go on to take the first set by a final score of 25-9.

Brooklyn would not go down lightly, as the Bulldogs set the tone of the second set, going on a 6-0 run to start off the set. Helping fuel the run was the serving of senior Kathy Chu and the blocking of junior Manon Bailly at the front of the net. BC would lead by as many as seven, 9-2; before the Scarlet Raiders began to chip away and their deficit, eventually tying the set at 12-12. From there on out, both teams would battle back-and-forth, but in the end it would be Rutgers-Newark squeaking out a 26-24 win to take the second set to go up 2-0. The second set featured 11 ties and five lead changes.

Looking to put the match away, the Scarlet Raiders used a 7-1 run to build momentum in the third set. Rutgers-Newark would lead by as many as 14, 18-4, before the Bulldogs staged a furious comeback with 9-0 run to cut their deficit to five, 18-13. However, in the end, the deficit would be too great to overcome, as the Scarlet Raiders would eventually go on to take the final set with a 25-17 score.

Brooklyn was led by junior Jillian Escobar and sophomore Kayla Scurry, as the duo registered five kills each. Escobar also chipped in with three service aces and five digs. Chu paced the offense with 13 assists, while Bailly finished with two solo blocks and two block assists, to go along with three kills. Freshman Sasha Roopchand was solid defensively racking up a match-high 15 digs, while sophomore Daniza Pina added 10 digs on the afternoon.

For Rutgers-Newark, senior Stephanie Touzan led the way with a match-best 11 kills, while classmate Rachel Witt contributed with seven kills and five service aces. Junior Jen Mendoza dished out 25 assists, to go along with 14 digs for the double-double, while junior Paulina Walega added 11 digs.

Brooklyn will next be in action at the second City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Multi-Match of the season, which will be held at Baruch College on Monday, October 8th. The Bulldogs will take on York College at 10:00 am, before battling the College of Staten Island at 12:00 pm.
