Softball Falls to NJCU

Box Score Jersey City, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Softball team dropped a non-conference game on the road against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University (NJCU) on Thursday afternoon in Jersey City, NJ. The Gothic Knights took the opener of a scheduled doubleheader, 9-7; while the nightcap was called after four innings due to darkness, with NJCU leading 2-1.

Coming in the game one, the NJCU bats exploded for nine runs, eight of which were scored via the long ball, led by Marissa Bariso's two three-run homeruns.

Bariso got the home team on the board early with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first and later added her second three-run shot of the day in the bottom of the fifth, to erase a one run deficit and give the Gothic Knights a 7-5 lead. Bariso finished the game going 2-for-3 with six RBI and two runs scored.

Later on, with the game tied at 7-7, Taylor Setar capped the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, to give NJCU a 9-7 lead, which would be the eventual final score.

Brooklyn got on the board in the top of the third on an RBI single from freshman Samantha Rodriguez that brought home junior Stephanie Caravello.

The Bulldogs would later take the lead in the top of the fourth, when BC plated four runs, to go ahead 5-3. Sophomore Kayla Hill helped spark the rally, as her two-run double scored seniors Norah Marley and Kim Konklewski. Marley and Caravello each had RBI singles in the inning as well.

The Gothic Knights would respond with a run in their half of the fourth, as an RBI single from Stephanie Murphy brought home Gabrielle Rivera to make it 5-4 in favor of the visiting Bulldogs. NJCU would regain the lead on Bario's second homerun of the day.

Rodriguez's RBI double in the sixth that scored Hill would get the Bulldogs back to within one, while Caravello scoring on a passed ball tied the game at seven all later in the inning. That's as close as the Bulldogs would get, as Setar's homerun would account for the eventual deciding runs.

Caravelllo and Rodriguez each had three hits in the game for Brooklyn.

Ashley O'Beirne (9-5) picked up the win for NJCU, allowing seven runs (five earned) on 14 hits, while walking three and striking out three over seven innings. Hill (5-2) took the loss allowing nine runs on nine hits, while walking two and striking out four in six innings of work.

In the nightcap, NJCU once again got on the board early, plating two runs in the bottom of the first taking advantage of a pair of BC errors.

The game would remain 2-0 in favor of the home team until the top of the third, when Caravello belted a solo homerun over the left field fence to make it 2-1 NJCU.

BC would be unable to complete its comeback attempt, as the game would be called after the fourth inning due to darkness. The game would not meet the minumum five innings to be considered a regulation contest.

Caravello and classmate Amanda Bisz both went 2-for-2 in the game.

O'Beirne allowed just one run on four hits, while walking one and striking out five over four innings of work. Bisz allowed two unearned runs on two hits, while walking three and striking out three over four innings.
