Box Score Staten Island, NY --- Coming in the third game of the 2013 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Applebee's Softball Championships, the #3 seeded Brooklyn College Softball team eliminated the #1 seeded and reigning CUNYAC champion Bearcats of Baruch College by a score of 9-1 at the Softball Complex at the College of Staten Island.
The Bulldogs dropped their first game of the day (game two), 4-1, against #2 College of Staten Island; while the Bearcats dropped the opening game of the championships, 5-4, against #4 Hunter College, setting up the first elimination game of the championships.
Facing elimination, Brooklyn junior
Marie Oneto pitched a gem for the Bulldogs, who have now advanced to the second day of the championships for a second straight season, tossing five solid innings, allowing just one run, while surrendering nine hits and striking out one, to earn the victory.
The Bulldogs will play again tomorrow (game 5), Saturday, May 4th, against Hunter, in the second elimination game of the championships. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm at the CSI Softball Complex. Hunter lost 12-1 against CSI in fourth game of the day. The winner will face Staten Island in game six at 2:00 pm. BC will need to win three games tomorrow to claim the championship and earn the CUNYAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championships.
Brooklyn would jump out to an early lead, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning and adding another three in the top of the second; as the Bulldogs would go on to earn a 9-1 win. The game ended after five due to the run rule (being ahead by eight or more runs after five innings).
Senior
Kim Konklewski went a perfect 4-for-4 in the game with a run scored, while junior
Stephanie Caravello went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Freshman
Samantha Rodriguez contributed with a solid effort, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior
Allison Donovan also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Baruch's Christine Bowan went 2-for-3 in the game, while Regina Cardinale drove in the lone Bearcats run, that scored Olivia Auman.
Nicole Flint took the loss, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 15 hits, while striking out two over five innings.
