Box Score Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team (0-1) dropped a hard fought match in their 2013 season opener against the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark (2-0) on Thursday night at the West Quad Center by a score of 3-1 (25-12, 18-25, 25-17, 25-19).
The visiting Scarlet Raiders took the opening set with ease, 25-12, hitting a solid .303 (13 kills/3 errors/33 total attacks). Trailing 4-3 early on in the set, Rutgers-Newark rattled off four straight points to take a 7-4 lead, as the visitors would never look back en route to their opening set win.
The Bulldogs would not go down lightly; however, as Brooklyn answered back with a 25-18 win in the second set, behind a strong offense that racked up 16 kills in the set. The serving of freshman
Crystal Wu got BC up 3-0 early on, while the powerful hitting displayed senior
Jillian Escobar and freshman
Julia Bogdan and
Francesca LoCascio helped the Bulldogs even the match at 1-1.
The third set was the most competitive with six ties and three lead changes. In the end, Rutgers-Newark would take the set 25-17. Tied at 9-9, the Scarlet Raiders used an 8-2 run to take command of the set.
Up 2-1, the visitors from Newark would never trail in the fourth and final set, en route to their 25-19 win to take the match 3-1.
Brooklyn was led by LoCascio's match-high 15 kills, while Escobar tied for the match-high in digs with 21, to go along with nine kills. Bogdan also had nine kills, to go with 16 digs, while Wu recorded a double-double with 33 assists and 18 digs. Freshman
Anna Li chipped in with 13 digs.
For Rutgers-Newark, Sharee Gordan finished with a team-high 10 kills, while Emilie Pulecio dished out 18 assists, to go with 11 digs. Chrissy Campanelli also registered a double-double with 10 assists and 10 digs. Kathy Hormaza chipped in with 21 digs and eight kills, while Adrianna Pagnotta finished with 15 digs and eight kills. Paulina Walega contributed with 14 digs.
Brooklyn returns to action on Saturday, September 14th, when the Bulldogs will open City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play against Baruch College (9:00 am) and Hunter College (11:00 am). The matches will be played at York College in Jamaica, NY as part of a multi-match.
