Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Maritime Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Throggs Neck, NY --- The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team concluded its 2014 regular season with a pair of wins on Saturday in a tri-match hosted by SUNY Maritime College. The Bulldogs defeated host Maritime in four sets, 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 25-14), before sweeping King's College (PA) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-19).

Brooklyn ends the regular season with a 12-20 overall record and will enter the 2014 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Women's Volleyball Championships as the #5 seed. The Bulldogs will travel to #4 City College of New York (CCNY) on Tuesday, November 4th for a quarterfinals round matchup. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start time.

The winner will advance to the semifinals on Friday, November 7th, hosted by Baruch College. The championship final will be held the same day.

Starting off against the host Privateers, BC was led by sophomore Francesca LoCascio's team-high 11 kills, while hitting .526. Classmate Christolia Butler added 10 kills on a .529 hitting percentage and four total blocks, while freshman Jessica Yin paced the offense with 28 assists. Junior Sasha Roopchand chipped in with 15 digs on the defensive side, while senior Fanny Ng was also in double figures in digs with 14.

Maritime was led by the trio of Gabrielle Kempski (12 kills), Carly Lombardo (11 kills) and Shannon Brady (10 kills). Lombardo also added 17 assists to record a double-double, while also adding seven digs. Kempski finished with a double-double as well with 13 digs, while Brady just missed out on a double-double, finishing with nine digs. Christine McCormack also helped the pace the offense with 13 assists, while Sydney Carella contributed with 18 digs.

The teams combined for 18 ties and 11 lead changes throughout the four sets.

In the second match of the day for Brooklyn, against the Monarchs, the Bulldogs were again led by the duo of LoCascio (13 kills; .571 hitting percentage) and Butler (12 kills; .524 hitting percentage). Yin again set up the offense with 32 assists, while Ng and Roopchand again helped the anchor the defense with 15 and 10 digs, respectively.

King's (PA) was led by Emily Heimbecker's eight kills on a .389 hitting percentage, while Sarah Busse finished with 14 assists. Elen O'Donnell added 10 digs.

The teams combined for 25 ties and 15 lead changes as Brooklyn would edge out three straight hard, fought wins to secure the straight sets win and sweep on the day.
