Softball Opens 2014 Season with Doubleheader Sweep Over NJCU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Brooklyn, NY --- Under first year head coach Michael Ponsiglione, the Brooklyn College Softball team opened its 2014 campaign with a doubleheader sweep over the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Thursday at BC Field. The Bulldogs took the opener 6-4 and claimed an 11-6 win in the nightcap to complete the twin bill sweep.

With the wins, Brooklyn begins its season with a 2-0 record, while NJCU drops to 2-10 overall on the year.

In the opener, BC scored the first two runs of the game, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Maria Mantagas took advantage of a fielding error that allowed her to score the first run of the game, while classmate Kayla Hill's infield single brought home sophomore Arislenia Rodriguez.

The lead would not last long; however, as the Gothic Knights answered with a four-run third inning, to take a 4-2 edge. Marissa Bariso's two-run double that scored Thalia Garcia and Casey Perez highlighted the inning. Brianna Rosario's RBI triple, which plated Taylor Setar, began the scoring; while Perez' RBI single scored Rosario.

The game would remain 4-2 in favor of the visitors until the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore Samantha Rodriguez singled through the right side to score Hill and cut BC's deficit to one, 4-3.

Brooklyn would complete its come-back scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on a key NJCU error. Senior Amanda Bisz tied the game with an RBI single that scored junior Geena Bell, while senior Allison Donovan put the Bulldogs ahead with an RBI double that scored Hill. Bisz would come around to score on an RBI single by Samantha Rodriguez.

Senior Marie Oneto (1-0) picked up the season opening win, tossing a complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out four batters and walking two over seven innings. Her counterpart, Ashley Latushko (2-5) took the loss, allowing six runs (one earned) on 10 hits, while striking out one and walking three.

The Bulldogs would get on the board first in the second game as well, as senior Stephanie Caravello plated home Hill and Donovan drove home Bisz. For Donovan, it would be her 100th career hit, joining fellow classmates Caravello and Meagan Cranston. Cranston was the first to get her 100th career hit, as she reached the milestone last season on May 3rd at the CUNYAC Championships against Baruch College; while Caravello notched her 100th career hit in BC's last game of the season a year ago against Elmira College in the ECAC Metro Championships on May 8th.

NJCU would answer quickly with a pair of runs of their own in the second inning, as an RBI double by Kayla Muniz brought home Maxine Kaminski to put the Gothic Knights on the board. Bariso would later come around to score on a BC throwing error to tie the game at 2-2.

Brooklyn would retake the lead in their half of the second, as Cranston's RBI triple scored junior Kristina Bermudez and Bell's single drove home Cranston to put the home team ahead, 4-2. The Bulldogs would later add another run in the third and three more in the fourth to take a commanding 8-2 advantage.

The Gothic Knights would not go down lightly, as NJCU plated three runs in the fifth to cut its deficit to three, 8-5. That's as close as the visitors would get, as the Bulldogs would score three more runs en route to their 11-6 victory.

For the game, BC pounded out 16 hits for 11 runs. Six BC players had a multi-hit game, led by three from Samantha Rodriguez. Cransotn, Hill and Bisz also scored two runs each, while Hill, Caravello, Donovan and Rodriguez all drove home two runs apiece.

Bisz (1-0) earned the win allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits, while walking two and striking out three over seven innings.  Her counterpart, Setar (0-2), took the loss allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on 16 hits, while walking three over six innings.

Brooklyn will be back in action tomorrow, Friday, March 21st, as the Bulldogs will host the Rams of Farmingdale State College. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3:00 pm at BC Field.
