Softball Splits Doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Newark, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Softball team (3-5) split a non-conference doubleheader against the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers-Newark (7-9) on the road at Alumni Field in Newark, NJ. The visiting Bulldogs held off the Scarlet Raiders in the opener edging out a 4-3 win, while Rutgers-Newark was victorious in the nightcap, 5-2, to earn the split.

In game one, BC scored the first four runs of the game, plating three runs in the second and another run in the third. Seniors Amanda Bisz, Allison Donovan and Meagan Cranston all had a multi-hit game, as the Bulldogs pounded out 11 hits. Cranston, junior Geena Bell and sophomore Samantha Rodriguez all drove in a run, scoring sophomore Arislenia Rodriguez, Donovan and Cranston, respectively, to fuel the three-run inning in the second. In total, Brooklyn scored three runs on five hits and an error in the second inning.

Donovan's RBI double in the third that scored classmate Stephanie Caravello capped off Brooklyn's scoring.

The game would remain 4-0 in favor of the Bulldogs until the bottom of the seventh, when the Scarlet Raiders plated three runs on three hits and an error. Vannessa Romero, who led off the inning with a double, would come around to score Rutgers-Newark's first fun of the game, coming home on a throwing error. Eleni Lutas, who singled to get on base, would later steal home for the Scarlet Raiders second run of the game; while Tiara Santi's RBI single brought home Krista Casale to make it 4-3, the eventual final score.

Senior Marie Oneto (2-1) earned the hard fought win tossing a complete game, allowing three runs on nine hits, while walking one and striking out four over seven innings. Her counterpart, Brianna Alicchio (2-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on 11 hits, while walking two and striking out two over seven innings.

In the nightcap, Rutgers-Newark would get on the board first, scoring four runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth to take a commanding 5-0 advantage. Romero's two-run double in the fourth highlighted the Scarlet Raiders four-run rally on three hits and two errors. Liane Drastal and Eleni Lutas also drove in a run in the inning.

Anna Carlson's sacrifice fly to left in the fifth that scored Toniann Donde capped off the scoring for the home team.

The Bulldogs would finally get on the board in the sixth on an RBI single from Bisz that brought home junior Kristina Bermudez. Donovan would later draw a walk with the bases loaded to bring home Samantha Rodriguez and cut BC's deficit to 5-2.

Brooklyn would again threaten in the seventh loading the bases for a second straight inning; however, Rutgers-Newark would escape without allowing a run to take home the win.

Bisz (1-1) took the loss for BC, allowing five runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out four over six innings of work. Katie Boyd (3-4) picked up the win, allowing two runs on five hits, while walking seven and striking out two over 6.1 innings. Jess Cannon (1) picked up the save closing out the final two outs of the game.

Brooklyn will return to the diamond on Thursday, March 27th, as the Bulldogs will host the Eagles of the College of St. Elizabeth in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 pm at BC Field.
