Softball Sweeps Baruch in CUNYAC Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team opened City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play with a doubleheader sweep over the Bearcats of Baruch College on Saturday at Brooklyn College Field. The Bulldogs took game one 13-0 (five innings) and the second game 6-2 to complete the twin bill sweep.

With the wins, Brooklyn improves to 7-5 overall on the year and 2-0 in the CUNYAC; while Baruch drops to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

The Bulldogs' offense exploded for 13 runs on 13 hits in the opener, as the home team scored early and often en route to winning via the run rule. After scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second, Brooklyn put the game away with seven runs in the third to break the game open. The home team would add another run in the fourth to eventually take home a 13-0 win.

Junior Kayla Hill powered the Brooklyn offense going a perfect 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Senior Meagan Cranston also helped set the tone going 3-for-3, including an inside the park homerun, with two RBI and four runs scored, while classmate Amanda Bisz also went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.

Senior Stephanie Caravello, junior Geena Bell and sophomores Samantha Rodriguez and Arislenia Rodriguez all drove in a run.

Senior Marie Oneto (3-1) tossed a gem in the circle for Brooklyn, allowing just two hits over five innings, to go along with five strikeouts for the complete game shutout.

Olivia Auman (0-3) took the loss, allowing 12 runs (nine earned) on 12 hits, while walking one and striking out one over three innings. Courtney White pitched the final inning, allowing one run on one hit.

In game two, the Bearcats got on the board early, as Auman's sacrifice fly to centerfield scored Jacqueline Gioia, who doubled to left field to get on base.

The game remained 1-0 in favor of Baruch until the bottom of the fourth, when Brooklyn plated a pair of runs to take their first lead of the game, 2-1. Back-to-back triples from Samantha Rodriguez and Caravello got the Bulldogs on the board. Caravello would come in to score on an RBI single from senior Allison Donovan.

The home team would add another run in the fifth on an RBI single from Bisz that scored Bell to go ahead 3-1. Bisz would strike again in the sixth, as her two-run double that plated Bell and Cranston capped a three-run inning that gave the Bulldogs a commanding 6-1 lead. Hill's sacrifice fly to left that scored senior Nicole Tufano scored the first run of the inning.

Baruch would add a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Christina Chin that scored Jaclyn Torres, as the Bearcats would eventually go down 6-2. Chin finished the game going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Hill (2-2) earned the win for Brooklyn, allowing just two runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out six over seven strong innings. Her counterpart, Auman (0-4) took the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits, while walking four and striking out two over six innings of work.

Brooklyn returns to action this Wednesday, April 2nd, as the Bulldogs will play host to CUNYAC rival and reigning conference champions, the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 pm at BC Field.
