Brooklyn, NY --- Under first-year head coach,
Michael Ponsiglione, the Brooklyn College Bulldogs enter the 2014 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Softball Championships as the #2 seed after posting a 24-12 overall record (10-2 CUNYAC) during the regular season.
By virtue of its #2 seed, the Bulldogs have received a first round bye for the first time in program history and will automatically play in the championship double elimination round that is set to begin on Friday, May 2nd at Queens College. The 24 wins this season also set a program record for single season wins.
Brooklyn will take on the winner of the #3 Hunter College/#6 Baruch College play-in game at 1:00 pm on Friday at Queens.
Helping ease Ponsiglione's first season was the senior class of
Stephanie Caravello,
Allison Donovan,
Meagan Cranston,
Marie Oneto and
Amanda Bisz that will look to end their collegiate careers with a CUNYAC championship – a first in program history.
Caravello had a career year this season, posting a .427 (44-for-103) batting average with 28 RBI and 30 runs scored, while playing in 33 games, making 31 starts. She's also recorded a .982 fielding percentage at first base. Caravello was named the CUNYAC Player of the Week once this season.
Donovan, a former CUNYAC Rookie of the Year and CUNYAC Second Team-All-Star, also had a stellar senior season. The shortstop started in all 36 games this season for BC, posting a .336 (38-for-113) with 23 RBI and 22 runs scored, to go along with a .932 fielding percentage.
Cranston has started in all 34 games played, while hitting .289 (28-for-97) with 13 RBI and 30 runs scored. Oneto has been solid in the circle for BC, owning a 2.52 ERA with an 8-5 record. She's totaled 66.2 innings and struck out 44 batters, while earning CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week honors twice during the season.
Bisz has been a dual threat for the Bulldogs with her bat and her arm, hitting .378 (42-for-111) on the year with 31 RBI and 23 runs scored, while also registering a 2.36 ERA with a 5-1 record. She's struck out 45 batters over 53.1 innings and has earned CUNYAC Player of the Week selection and a CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week honor.
Similar to Bisz, junior
Kayla Hill, the CUNYAC Player of the Year last season, has also been a dual threat for Brooklyn, batting .361 (44-for-122) with 27 RBI and 36 runs scored, to go along with a 10-4 record with a 3.63 ERA totaling 79 innings pitched and 46 strikeouts. Hill also earned a CUNYAC Player of the Week honor and a CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week selection.
Sophomore
Samantha Rodriguez, a CUNAYC All-Star last season, has repeated her impressive rookie season posting a .416 (47-for-113) batting average with 29 RBI and 22 runs scored this year. Rodriguez earned a CUNYAC Player of the Week selection this season.
Top seed College of Staten Island will be a heavy favorite to repeat as CUNYAC champion and capture its conference leading 16th title in program history after posting a perfect 12-0 league record this season. 12-time champion Hunter will also be a threat to Brooklyn's championship aspirations.
