Brooklyn Goes 1-1 on Day One of CUNYAC Softball Championships

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Flushing, NY --- The #2 seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs (25-13) posted a 1-1 record on the first day of the double elimination round of the 2014 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Applebee's Softball Championships on Friday at Queens College.

In BC's first game of the day against the #3 seeded Hunter College Hawks, the Bulldogs fell 8-1. Facing a day one exit in its second game, Brooklyn bounced back to defeat the #4 seeded Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 11-3, to stave off elimination and advance to the day two of the championships.

Hunter Game Recap
Senior Stephanie Caravello got the Bulldogs on the board early with a solo homerun over the left field wall in the bottom of the first.

The lead would not last long; however, as the Hawks took advantage of a BC fielding miscue, that would eventually lead to an RBI single from Briana Lombardo that scored Julia Lipovac.

Hunter would add a run in the third on an RBI single from Victoria Slavik that plated Taylor Crofts to take a 2-1 lead. The Hawks would score two more runs in the fifth, highlighted by an RBI double from Aleta Terril that brought home Slavik. Terril would later come around to score on a wild pitch as Hunter would go ahead 4-1.

The Hawks would put the game away with a four-run seventh inning on three hits and an error.

Senior Marie Oneto (8-6) took the loss for the Bulldogs allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits over 2 and 2/3 innings. Classmate Amanda Bisz pitched the final four and 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits, while walking three and striking out seven.

Sara Beck (7-7) picked up the win for Hunter, allowing one run on three hits, while walking two and striking out three over seven innings.

John Jay Game Recap
Brooklyn once again got on the scoreboard early, as the Bulldogs put up two runs in the second. Junior Kayla Hill's RBI single brought in classmate Kristina Bermudez, while junior Geena Bell would later come around to score on a wild pitch.

However, similar to BC's first game, the lead would not last long, as the Bloodhounds scored three times in the third to go ahead 3-2.  Jennifer Pace's RBI single that scored Marlin Rallas put John Jay on the board, while Danielle Minaya's two-run double that scored Lana Kovac and Pace gave the Bloodhounds the lead.

The game remained 3-2 in favor of John Jay until the fifth inning, when the Brooklyn bats exploded for nine runs on nine hits in the fifth to end the game, 11-3, via the run rule. Sophomore Arislenia Rodriguez helped fuel the nine-run rally with three RBI's, including the go-ahead two-run double that put the Bulldogs back on top and another RBI double that scored the final run of the game. Bermudez and Caravello each had two-run double in the inning as well.

Hill (11-4) picked up the win for BC, allowing three runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out three over five innings of work.

Sara McKenna (7-16) took the loss, allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits, while walking two over 4 and 2/3 innings. Kovac faced one batter in the inning allowing one hit.

Brooklyn will now play against Hunter in a rematch at 10:30 am tomorrow, Saturday, May 3rd at Queens College. The loser will be eliminated, while the winner will advance to the play against top seed Staten Island.
