Softball Drops Two at Albertus Magnus; Hill and Rodriguez Record 100th Career Hits

New Haven, CT --- The Brooklyn College Softball team (1-3) dropped a non-conference doubleheader on the road on Thursday afternoon against the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College (4-6) at Celentano Field in New Haven, CT.

The Bulldogs fell 5-4 in eight innings in game one, and dropped the second game by an identical 5-4 score.

Brooklyn struck early in the opener, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Kayla Hill drove in freshman Chrissy Heyer with an RBI single to center field for the first run of the game. Hill would later come around to score on an RBI single through the right side from senior Kimberly Brennan. BC final run of the inning would come from a bases load walk to senior Becky Ganley that brought home junior Ashley Tkacsik.

The game would remain 3-0 in favor of the Bulldogs until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Falcons answered with a three-run inning of their own to tie the game. Errors would be costly for Brooklyn in the inning, as Albertus Magnus would score three runs on two hits and three errors. Daysia Wehder's RBI single to left brought home Alyssa Puccilli for the home team's first run, while Brianna Whitfield would score the second run in the same sequence on a throwing error by the left fielder. Ana Gomez would later score the game tying run on an error by the pitcher following a bunt attempt from Brianna Spadacenta.

The game would stay 3-3 until the top of the eighth, when BC would take advantage of an error by the centerfielder that allowed Samantha Rodriguez to score and put the Bulldogs back on top, 4-3.

The lead would not last long; however, as the Falcons would answer with a walk-off two run home run in the bottom of the inning to left field from Melissa Castillo that also scored Gillian Fortier to give Albertus Magnus the 5-4 comeback win.

Tkacsik started the game in the circle for Brooklyn, tossing five innings, allowing three unearned runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out three. Hill (0-1) took the loss allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out three over 2.1 innings of work.

Samantha Maselli (3-2) picked up the win for the Falcons, tossing a complete game, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, while walking two and striking out eight over eight innings.

Game two would see the Falcons score a run in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead. Fortier's RBI single in the third that scored Puccilli opened the scoring, while Rachel Cataudella's RBI groundout would score Gomez in the fourth.

The game remained 2-0 in favor of the home team, until BC's offense finally broke through in the top of the sixth scoring four runs to go ahead 4-2. After the Bulldogs loaded the basses, back-to-back hit-by-pitches for Brennan and senior Kristina Bermudez would tie the game at 2-2. BC would take the lead on a two-run single from junior Liza Nunez that plated seniors Michelle Cranston and Nathalie DeJesus, who both came into the game as pinch runners.

Similar to the opener, Albertus Magnus would again use late inning dramatics, as the Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to clinch its second comeback win of the day. Carli Matrisian's RBI triple scoring Cataudella began the rally, while Brittney Urciuoli's sacrifice fly to left field brought home Matrisian and tied the game at 4-4. Castillo would again be the hero, as her RBI double brought home Fortier for the game-winning run.

Hill took the loss allowing five runs on 10 hits, while striking out one over 6.2 innings. Shyleen Ortiz (1-3) picked up her first win of the season allowing four runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out one over seven complete innings.

Game two saw a pair of Bulldogs reach personal milestones, as both Hill and Rodriguez eclipsed 100 hits for their BC careers. Rodriguez would hit the milestone first with her double in the top of the fourth, while Hill joined the 100-hit club with her single in the top of the sixth.

Brooklyn will be back in action this Sunday, March 22nd, as the Bulldogs will be on the road to take on New York University. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start time and will be held at Fordham University's Bahoshy Softball Complex in the Bronx, NY. Live stats and video will be available.
