Staten Island, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team (6-10 / 4-2 CUNYAC) traveled across the Verrazano Bridge on Monday afternoon to take on the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island (12-4 / 2-0 CUNYAC) in a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) doubleheader at the CSI Softball Complex.
CSI took the opener 5-0, before taking game two, 7-2, to complete the doubleheader sweep.
The Dolphins scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to start off the scoring, as Brittany Smith stole home to put the home team on the board, while Danielle Locke's RBI single brought home Christina Tufano to make it 2-0.
The game would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fourth, as CSI would add three more runs to take the eventual 5-0 victory. Smith drew a bases loaded walk to bring home Maxine Jasko, while Tufano's two-run single through the right side plated both Alexa Pederson and Jacqueline Cautela to cap the scoring.
Cautela (8-2) kept the BC offense silent all game long, as she tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and three walks, to go with four strikeouts. Her counterpart,
Kimberly Brennan (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs on two hits, while walking six batters over 3.2 innings.
Ashley Tkacsik finished the game, allowing three hits and two walks over 2.1 innings.
Chrissy Heyer went 2-for-2 for Brooklyn.
Game two saw the Bulldogs take the early lead, as Tkacsik's RBI double to right center brought home
Samantha Rodriguez in the top of the second to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors.
The lead would not last long; however, as the Dolphins plated three runs in their half of the second to take a 3-1 lead. CSI would capitalize on three key BC errors to score the three unearned runs.
The home team would add two runs in the third and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
Tkacsik would strike again in the sixth with an RBI single that once again scored Rodriguez to make it 7-2, the eventual final score. Tkacsik and Rodriguez each tallied two hits to combine for all of BC's hits in the game.
Locke drove in a pair of runs and also scored twice for CSI, while Cautela and Nicolette Trapani each drove in a run as well.
Trapani (4-2) picked up the win for the Dolphins, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking four and striking out 10 over seven solid innings. Her counterpart,
Kayla Hill (3-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits, while walking four and striking out one over five innings. Tkacsik pitched the final inning, allowing just one hit.
Brooklyn will return to action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7th, as the Bulldogs will host the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice in another CUNYAC twinbill. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Brooklyn College Field.
