Brooklyn Sweeps John Jay; Ashley Tkacsik Throws No-Hitter in Game One

Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Softball team (8-10 / 6-2 CUNYAC) swept a City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) doubleheader over the visiting Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice (6-12 / 1-3 CUNYAC) on Tuesday afternoon at Brooklyn College Field.

BC took the opening game 8-0 (six innings), before edging out a 7-6 win in game two to complete the sweep.

In game one, junior Ashley Tkacsik silenced the Bloodhounds' bats, tossing a no-hitter, as she struck out seven batters over six solid innings to improve to 2-2 on the year.

The Bulldogs offense wasted little time in taking control of the game, as the home team scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Samantha Rodriguez's RBI single through the left side scoring Chrissy Heyer got BC on the board, while Tkacsik helped herself out with an RBI single of her own through the left side to score Rodriguez. Liza Nunez capped off the four-run inning with a two-run triple to left center that brought home both Kayla Hill and Tkacsik.

Brooklyn would add its fifth run in the third inning, as Michelle Cranston came around to score on a costly John Jay error, while Heyer would score for a second time on a ground out by Breanna Maresca in the fourth to make it 6-0 in favor of the home team.

Looking to end the game early via run rule, Rodriguez's two-run single to right field in the bottom of the sixth brining home both Nathalie DeJesus and Heyer did the trick to make it an 8-0 final.

Catherine Alvarado (3-2) took the loss for the Bloodhounds, surrendering eight runs (five earned) on seven hits, while walking seven and striking out two over five innings.

Rodriguez continued her solid hitting into game two, as her RBI single in the bottom of the first scoring Heyer got the Bulldogs up on the board first once again.

However, the John Jay bats would come alive in the top of the second, as Jessica Zaccari's RBI triple scoring Jennifer Varela tied the game. Zaccari would come in to score on Magnolia Perez's RBI single to center field to give the visitors their first lead of the day.

Brooklyn would regain the lead quickly with a two-run inning of its own in the bottom half of the second. Jamie Dolce tied the game scoring following an error by the left fielder on a hit by Becky Ganley, while Ganley would come in to score on Heyer's RBI single through the right side to make it 3-2 in favor of BC.

John Jay would continue to stay in the game, scoring a run in the third and fourth innings to take a slim 4-3 lead. Varela's RBI triple to left scored Lisa Pellegrino to make it 3-3, while Jennifer Pace's RBI single to left center brought in Perez for the fourth run of the game.
Brooklyn would answer with a three-run fourth to retake the lead for good, 7-4. Nunez scored the tying run by taking advantage of a key Bloodhounds error, while DeJesus had the big hit of the inning with a two-run double to left that scored both Ganley and Dolce. DeJesus would come in to score on Hill's RBI single through the left side for BC's seventh and final run of the game.

John Jay would again look to get back in the game with a two-run fifth inning, as Danielle Minaya stole home, while Varela scored following a key BC error. However, the Bloodhounds would be unable to get the tying run, as Brooklyn would hold on for the eventual 7-6 final to complete the sweep.

Kimberly Brennan started the game for BC, going 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out three. Tkascik (3-2) came in relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out two in 2.2 innings of work to pick up the win. Hill finished the game, allowing just two hits and striking out three over two innings to pick up her second save of the season.

Pellegrino (2-3) took the loss for John Jay, allowing seven runs (four earned) on nine hits, while walking two and striking out two over six innings.

Brooklyn is back in action on Thursday, April 9th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Jersey City, NJ to take on the Gothic Nights of New Jersey City University in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm. Live stats will be available.
