Jersey City, NJ --- The Brooklyn College Softball team (9-11) split a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex in Jersey City, NJ against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University (2-16).
The Bulldogs dropped the opener 4-3, before taking the nightcap 11-4 to secure the twin bill split.
BC took an early 3-0 lead as the Bulldogs plated a pair of runs in the top of the first and another run in the top of the second.
Brooklyn would get on the board via a double steal, as
Chrissy Heyer swiped home, while
Liza Nunez stole second to get into scoring position. Heyer led off the inning with a single to third base and advanced to third on a single up the middle from Nunez.
Ashley Tkacsik would later reach base via a fielding error by the second basemen, which allowed Nunez to score the second run of the inning. Tkacsik would be credited with an RBI.
Becky Ganley would score the third run of the game by taking advantage of another Gothic Knights error as Nunez would get on base following a throwing error by the short stop.
The game would remain 3-0 in favor of the visitors until the bottom of the sixth, when the home team finally got on the board. The Bulldogs would trade an out for a run, as Jazz Randall would get thrown out attempting to steal, while Thalia Garcia would score on the throw.
Heading into their final at bat in the bottom of the seventh, the Gothic Knights would rally with a three run inning to complete their comeback win. After three singles loaded the bases, Deseree Johnson's RBI single brought home Brittany Paulikas to make it 3-2. Faith Ely would also score on a play following a Brooklyn miscue to tie the game at three all. NJCU would score the winning run on Crystal Torres' single to second base that plated Ashley Latushko.
Kayla Hill (3-5) took the loss for BC, allowing four runs (two earned) on eight hits, while striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings. Her counterpart, Paulikas (2-6) earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, while walking one and striking out two over seven complete innings.
Hill and Heyer each had two hits for Brooklyn, while Paulikas also had two hits for NJCU.
In game two, the Gothic Knights would strike first scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning. Garcia would score the first run of the game after Paulikas struck out swinging and thrown out at first base.
BC would answer quickly on an RBI single from Heyer that scored
Jamie Dolce to tie the game in the top of the second, while
Samantha Rodriguez's solo homerun over the right field fence in the top of the third gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game, 2-1.
The Gothic Knights would tie the game at two all in bottom half of the third, when Paulikas singled to the pitcher to score Garcia.
Rodriguez would drive in her second run of the game in the top of the fourth that scored Nunez to make it 3-2, while Heyer would later steal home in the same inning to make it 4-2.
NJCU would again tie the game with a pair of runs in its half of the fourth, as Johnson capitalized on a BC error to score the first run of the inning, while Garcia's RBI single down the left field line scored Torres.
Brooklyn would finally put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth, as the Bulldogs scored five runs on two hits and three crucial Gothic Knights errors to take a key 9-4 lead. BC would add two more runs in the seventh en route to its 11-4 victory.
Heyer had her first career four-hit game, going 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Rodriguez finished the night cap with four RBI, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Tkacsik and
Breanna Maresca each had two hits in the game as well, while Nunez also scored twice in the game.
For NJCU, Garcia went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Randall also had a multi-hit game.
Kimberly Brennan started the game for BC, going 3.2 innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits, while striking out four. Tkacsik (4-2) finished the game to earn the win, allowing just one hit and one walk over 3.1 innings and striking out two.
Latushko started the game for the Gothic Knights, tossing the first four innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits, while walking four and striking out two. Paulikas (2-7) finished the game and took the loss, surrendering seven runs (one earned) on seven hits, while striking out two over three innings.
Brooklyn returns to action this Saturday, April 11th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Padavan-Preller Field in Bellerose, NY to take on the Cardinals of York College in a CUNYAC doubleheader.
