Staten Island, NY --- The #3 seeded Brooklyn College Bulldogs (20-17) split day one of the double elimination round of the 2015 City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Pepsi Softball Championships on Friday at the College of Staten Island Softball Complex.
Brooklyn won its first game of the day over #2 seeded Hunter College, 10-0 (five innings), to move into the winner's bracket and guarantee its spot in day two of the championships. The Bulldogs dropped their second game of the day against top seed and host, CSI, 6-0.
Staten Island defeated #4 John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 3-2, in the first game of the day to move into the winner's bracket. The Hawks defeated John Jay, 12-1 (five innings) in the first elimination game of the championships to move onto day two.
Brooklyn and Hunter will face off for a second time in the first game of day two, tomorrow, Saturday, May 2nd at 12:00 pm at the CSI Softball Complex. Live stats will be available. The loser will be eliminated from the championships; while the winner will advance to play Staten Island at 2:00 pm. CSI will be in the driver's seat, as the Dolphins will need to lose twice in order to be eliminated.
Hunter Game RecapKayla Hill and
Samantha Rodriguez each scored twice to help spark a 10-run fourth inning that would propel the Bulldogs over the Hawks. The BC offense batted around in the fourth to score 10 runs on nine hits and three key Hunter errors en route to taking the 10-0 shutout victory and eventually ending the game in the fifth via the run rule. Hill, Tkacsik and Maresca all had a multi-hit game.
Hill (11-6) was also solid in the circle, allowing just one hit and a walk, while striking out four batters over five shutout innings. She threw just 69 pitches.
Erika Colangelo (7-5) took the loss for the Hawks, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits, while striking out three over three innings. Danielle Zurek allowed three unearned runs on three hits, while striking out two over two innings in relief.
Meghan O'Shea had Hunter's lone hit of the game.
CSI Game RecapJacqueline Cautela (14-6) silenced the Bulldogs in the fourth and final game of the opening day of the championships, tossing a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and striking out eight batters over seven solid innings.
Samantha Bowbliss went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored to help power the Dolphins offense. Danielle Locke, Maxine Jasko and Elizabeth Travieso also drove in runs.
Along with Bowbliss, Christina Tufano and Jasko also had a multi-hit game.
Hill (11-7) took the loss for BC, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, while striking out two over 3.2 innings. Brennan finished the game, pitching the final 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while walking one.
Bermudez and Bell each had a hit for Brooklyn in the game.
