Softball Falls to Hunter in ECAC First Round

Brooklyn, NY --- In the First Round of the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro/Upstate Softball Championships, the #5 seed Brooklyn College Bulldogs fell to the #4 seed Hunter College Hawks, 8-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Brooklyn College Field.

With the loss, Brooklyn ends its season with a 20-19 record, while Hunter moves to 20-9 overall on the year and advances to the double elimination round of the championships that will be hosted by top seed Stevens Institute of Technology May 9th and 10th.

Batting first as the lower seed, the Bulldogs got on the board early scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Samanatha Rodriguez's RBI triple over the right fielder brought home Kayla Hill for the first run of the game, while Chrissy Heyer would later knock in Rodriguez. Rodriguez's triple was the 150th hit of her career.

The game would remain 2-0 in favor of Brooklyn until the bottom of the third, when Hunter would take control scoring four runs to get on the board and take the lead, 4-2. Brianna Kresback's two-run single that got by the leaping short stop scored both Marie Mazzeo and Kristen McGoldrick to tie the game, while Victoria Slavik's two-run double to left center scored both Aleta Terrill and Kresback to cap off the four-run inning.

BC would answer with a four-run inning of its own in the top of the fifth to go back ahead by a score of 6-4. Rodriguez's RBI double to left center that scored Liza Nunez got the rally going, while Kristina Bermudez tied the game at four all with her sacrifice fly to center that scored Hill. Breanna Maresca's triple to left field would cap off the inning scoring both Rodriguez and Heyer.

Hunter would answer with a run in its half of the fifth, as Meghan O'Shea singled to left to bring home Kresback, cutting the Hawks deficit to one, 6-5.

Hunter would then retake the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on three costly Brooklyn errors to take an 8-6 lead, the eventual final score.

Kimberly Brennan started the game for BC, allowing four runs on four hits, while walking one over 2.2 innings. Kayla Hill (11-9) suffered the loss in relief, allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out one over 3.1 innings. Hill's strikeout was her 100th of the season.

Erika Colangelo started the game for the Hawks, allowing six runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out one over 4.1 innings. Sara Beck (8-1) earned the win in relief, as she allowed just one hit and struck out one over 2.2 innings.
