Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College women's soccer team handed the College of Staten Island their first conference loss to move into sole possession of first place in the CUNYAC, defeating the Dolphins 1-0 this evening. Brooklyn moves to 6-6-2 and 5-0 in conference play with the victory. Staten Island drops to 9-4-2 and 4-1 with the defeat.
"Tonight's victory can be attributed to the tough non-conference schedule we have played this season as well as the rigorous training sessions our ladies play through on a regular basis," commented Bulldogs head coach,
Patrick Horne. "That is why we were able to handle CSI's pressure this evening. We have been doing a good job of soaking up the pressure, handling it, and countering."
With both squads keeping everyone at the match on the edge of the seats all game long, it would be junior transfer forward
Cansu Usta who scored the game winner in the 86th minute on a free kick from 15 yards out following a CSI foul.
The Dolphins made a serious push in the final three minutes of the match including a clear shot on goal with just under three minutes remaining, but Bulldog keeper
Samantha Rodriguez positioned herself perfectly to make the save.
Despite being outshot 18-2, BC made the most of their opportunities with both shots on-goal.
Senior defender
Jasmine Fermin was once again the key in the backs getting to every ball sent preventing Dolphin scoring opportunities.
The Bulldogs will look to become undefeated regular season conference champs on Saturday as they host Lehman College. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
