Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Drops First Game of the Season at NYU, 59-49

New York, NY---In a low scoring affair, the Brooklyn College women's basketball lost their first game of the season this evening falling to New York University, 59-49, at Hunter College in non-conference action.  The Bulldogs move to 3-1 on the season.  NYU remains undefeated with a 7-0 mark with the victory.  Brooklyn will look to bounce back in conference action on Tuesday, Dec. 6, as they play host to 2016 CUNYAC Champion, Lehman.  Tip-off for the first game of a doubleheader is set for 5:00 pm.

Never outclassed throughout the contest and forcing 27 NYU turnovers to their 18, the Bulldogs just weren't able to put together that run that would give them the opportunity to win the game.  After scoring first to start the game, NYU would answer with two made free throws sixteen seconds in the game for a 2-1 lead, and keep an advantage for the remainder of the contest.  The Violets would push their lead up to 13 in the opening period before senior guard Taylor Gallagher knocked down a free throw and buried one of her three three-point makes on the night to cut the NYU lead to 18-9 heading into the second period.

Senior forward Olivia Colbert's made lay-up to open up the scoring in the second period cut the Violet lead to seven.  However, that is as close as BC would get as NYU responded to grab a double-digit lead for most of the second period.  The Bulldogs trailed NYU 27-17 at the half.

Similar to the second period, the Bulldogs struck first to start the second half on a Colbert lay-up.  NYU once again answered and took a ten-point lead with a little under 2:30 into the quarter.  Unlike the second period, the Bulldogs were able to come within seven points of the Violets twice.  The Violets pushed the lead back up to thirteen to end the third period.

Following the trend of the evening, the Bulldogs started the final period with a 6-0 run cutting the NYU lead to 45-38 with 7:35 left in the game.  However, the Violets responded with a 9-1 run of their own to eventually seal the win.

Brooklyn had a tough shooting night converting on 31.6% of their shots including 26.3% (5-19) from behind the arc. The Bulldogs were also out-rebounded for the first time this season 39-28, but matched NYU with ten offensive boards.

Senior guard Taylor Gallagher led the Bulldogs with 15 points.  Senior forward Olivia Colbert added 13 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.  Junior guard Karen Mak was BC's third leading scorer with eleven points while dishing out a game-high six assists.
