Daytona Beach, FL---The Brooklyn College women's basketball team dropped the first of two scheduled games at the Land of Magic Classic, falling to No. 14 Mary Washington (10-0), 71-49, this afternoon. Brooklyn moves to 5-2 overall with the loss. The Bulldogs will look to pick up a split on the trip as they take on Maine Maritime Academy (4-4) tomorrow, 12/29. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The Bulldogs would find themselves playing catch-up from the opening tip-off this afternoon, falling behind 14-2 in the first five-plus minutes of action. Brooklyn cut the lead to 14-7 in the next couple of minutes with back-to-back scores including a three-point make by junior guard Kailyn Richburg. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run before Brooklyn junior forward
Weronica Green stopped the bleeding with a make in the paint to cut the UMW lead to 20-9 to end the opening period.
The brunt of the damage would be done in the second period as the Eagles extended their lead to as many 27 points. However, the Bulldogs closed the gap to 40-20 before halftime with a 7-0 run capped by a three-point make by sophomore wing

Brooklyn was able to erase some of the damage done in the first half and in the beginning of the second half, cutting the Mary Washington lead to 45-30 with two minutes remaining in the third period. However, the Bulldogs would be outscored 9-2 heading into the final period trailing the Eagles 54-32.
UMW would knock down three of their eight three-point makes for the game in the final period to keep a comfortable cushion until the final buzzer.
The Eagles shot 50% (8-16) from the behind the arc for the game to the Bulldogs' 30% (6-20). Brooklyn struggled from the charity stripe this afternoon shooting just over 39% (9-23) for the game to the Eagles' 75%.
