Hoboken, NJ---Despite taking a 52-39 halftime lead, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team dropped their second game in a row, falling at Stevens Institute of Technology, 86-74, this afternoon. Brooklyn moves to 2-4 overall with the non-conference loss. Stevens improves to 4-1 with the victory.
Paced senior guard
Austin Wood's 25 first half points, the Bulldogs would lead the home team by as many as 17 points in the opening period. With the Bulldogs already up 33-31 with just under seven minutes left in the first half, two Wood free throws would spark a four-minute 15-0 run capped by a, Anaselrahman fastbreak lay-up with 2:59 remaining in the opening period. A Stevens lay-up with 19 seconds left in the first half cut the Bulldog lead to thirteen heading into intermission.
Brooklyn saw a couple of minor threats halfway through the second half, but maintained a 68-58 advantage with 9:58 left in regulation. Stevens would then go on a 9-0 run that cut the BC lead to one with 6:48 left in the game. Senior center Enees Nikovic scored two of his 15 points on a lay-up to stop the bleeding temporarily until Stevens tied the game 70-70 with an Evan Klimchak three-pointer. The home team then took their first lead since the 8:55 mark in the first half on another three-point make for the 73-70 advantage with 5:15 to go in the contest. A Nikovic free-throw cut the Stevens lead to two points, which would be the closest the Bulldogs would get for the rest of the game. Stevens outscored the Bulldogs 13-3 to close out the home victory.
Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs in the second half, committing ten to the Ducks' five. In the first half, the Bulldogs took advantage of Stevens' turnover woes outscoring the Ducks 20-4 off of turnovers.
Brooklyn cooled off from the floor in the second half shooting 25.9% in comparison to their 51.4% in the first period.
Wood would finish with a game-high 34 points while shooting 5-8 from beyond the arc and 11-12 from the charity stripe. Nikovic would add 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out with just under two minutes left in the game. Junior guard
Maynard Grant the IV also reached double-figures in scoring with ten points.
Brooklyn returns home on Tuesday, December 6, to host Lehman College in CUNYAC play. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 pm following the women's game against the Lightning, which tips off at 5:00 pm.
