Brooklyn, NY---The Brooklyn College softball team bounced back in a big way tonight, holding on to a 6-5 victory in Game 2 after falling to John Jay 15-4 in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Brooklyn College Field. BC moves to 3-11 overall with the split. The Bloodhounds are now 5-8 overall on the season. The Bulldogs will have a day off before hosting New Paltz (8-8) on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader scheduled for 5:00 PM.
Trailing 4-1 to start the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game, sophomore
Breanna Maresca led off with a triple to start the rally. Senior short stop
Samantha Rodriguez would drive her home on the next at-bat with an RBI single. BC would load the bases with
Shakira Feliciano hit by a pitch and
Brianna Preston walking. Second baseman
Kyla Gardner then hit into a fielder's choice, but the Bloodhounds' attempt at getting Rodriguez out at home failed cutting the John Jay lead to 4-3 with no outs. After a BC strikeout, Sascha Roopchand hit into the same situation and once again the Bloodhounds' attempt at an out at home failed, scoring Feliciano to tie the game 4-4. Senior oufielder
Ashley Mendez also hit into a fielder's choice on the next at-bat and this time an error by the shortstop scored Preston giving the Bulldogs their first lead since sophomore infielder
Michelle Cranston's solo homerun in the bottom of the first giving BC the 1-0 lead. It would be Cranston who was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored Gardner giving Brooklyn the 6-4 advantage.
The Bloodhounds threatened in the final inning, leading off with a double that scored a couple of ground outs later cutting the Bulldogs lead to 6-5. With two outs, Gardner knocked down a hard-hit ball at second picking it up and throwing the runner out for the final out of the game and the win.
In the first game, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning. However, the Bloodhounds responded with eight unanswered runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to take a 9-3 lead that they built on in the final two innings for the convincing 15-4 victory.
