Brooklyn, NY---Freshman forward
Victoria Ramirez scored two of the Bulldogs' three goals to help the BC women's soccer team prevail in their home and conference opener over John Jay, 3-2. Brooklyn moves to 2-3 overall with the victory. John Jay dips below .500 to 2-3 with the loss. The Bulldogs will be back on their home turf again in CUNYAC action on Saturday, September 17, against York. Kickoff is set for noon.
Fifth-year head coach,
Patrick Horne, would comment after the game, "I thought it was a good win despite some lapses during the match, but definitely a credit to the team to pull it out despie not playing our best soccer." Confident that his team should only get better as the season progresses, he concluded, "We have eight new starters that are still getting to know one another and it's a process. Only a freshman, I thought Victoria [Ramirez] played an exceptional match especially down the stretch scoring the game-winner."
The Bulldogs found themselves on their heels early with the Bloodhounds scoring in the first minute off of a deflection on the ensuing kickoff.
Brooklyn responded in the 19th minute with defensive pressure that led to a turnover caused by senior midfielder
Jordan Kerwin who scored head-on from ten yards out. Less than five minutes later, Ramirez gave the Bulldogs the lead in a one-on-one with the goalie on a breakaway.
The scoring continued in the first half with John Jay tying the match in the 39th minute. The score would remain 2-2 heading into halftime.
With the score still knotted 2-2, with less than ten minutes remaining in the match, it would be the rookie standout, Ramirez, again who scored the game-winner in the 82nd minute. Just prior to Ramirez's goal, the Bulldogs had two solid shots by Kerwin and junior forward
Cansu Usta that were saved.
The Bulldogs outshot the Bloodhounds 23-9 for the match including 13-7 for shots on goal.
Senior goalie
Samantha Rodriguez picked up her second win in goal with five saves on the evening.
