Brooklyn, NY---Now 2-0 in double overtime games this season, the Brooklyn College men's basketball team ended an eleven-game skid, defeating Medgar Evers, 96-87, on the road in conference play this evening. Brooklyn moves to 4-16 overall and 2-9 with the CUNYAC win. MEC drops to 3-14 and 2-8. The Bulldogs return home on January 31 to host CCNY at 7:15 pm following the women's game in a CUNYAC double-header.
After Medgar Evers scored the first bucket of the second extra period, Brooklyn responded with 11 unanswered points, sparked by back-to-back three-point makes by senior guards
Austin Wood and
Chris McIllhatton. Wood led all scorers with 27 points. The two senior guards combined for all nine of BC's three-pointers.
Brooklyn began the first overtime with a 6-0 run. However, the Cougars cut the BC lead to 83-82 with 1:37 remaining in the first extra period. After two
Niv Konfino makes at the charity stripe, the Cougars forced the second extra period with a three-point make with just over a minute to go. Brooklyn had a couple of opportunities in the final minute to win the game in the first overtime, but the Cougars held on for an extra five minutes.
Trailing by five points and on defense with just under a minute to go, the Bulldogs came up with a huge defensive stop that led to a Konfino lay-up with :47 left in regulation. Brooklyn then force a turnover on the ensuing possession with senior guard Valdon Baptiste coming up with a steal that immediately led to the McIllhatton three that tied the game 77-77 with :37 to play in regulation. The Bulldogs forced another Cougar turnover but missed to close out the contest in regulation. Brooklyn overcame a nine point deficit in the second half.
Exchanging baskets through the first ten minutes of the first half, Lehman extended their lead to ten points at the 4:41 mark. However, the Bulldogs closed out the first half with a 7-0 spurt that cut the Lightning lead to 41-38 heading into the intermission.
All five Brooklyn starters reached double-digit scoring. Junior guard
Maynard Grant IV, Konfino, and senior center
Enees Nikovic all finished with 14 points a piece. McIllhatton finished with twelve points on 4-12 from behind the arc. Grant finished the evening with a double-double, grabbing ten boards in the game.
Medgar Evers was led by Maurice Swaby II's 20 points.
